Why and How to Wax Your Car

Turtle Wax, Wax 2.0

Waxing a car is getting more and more overlooked as people go through car washes that simply spray colored foam on and call it a wax job. Also, people think that good car wash products such as “Zip Wax” actually put a wax coat on their car. While “Zip Wax” and such products are great products that give a great shine, you need an actual wax coat on your car.

Putting a wax coat on your car only takes about an hour or less, and is very important. It will offer protection against all sorts of elements like weather or rocks. Also, if you have a very solid wax coat or two on the car, a sheet of pollen or dirt is very easily washed away with a spray of water or even the rain.

Choosing a wax is very easy. Spray waxes and other such scams are worthless. However, Zymol and Turtle Wax are both great waxes. When choosing your wax, make sure it is a hard shell wax. Don’t be scammed because “Wax as you dry” or “Spray on and wipe off” seem so easy. Easy doesn’t necessarily mean that you will get a good wax. I would recommend Turtle Wax or, even better, Zymol. Zymol is very expensive, but well worth the money.

Putting the actual wax coat on the car is pretty easy. First, wash the car. While you are washing, make sure you get off any impurities. This means dirt, grime, dust, pollen, and anything that might be stuck on. If you have to, use your fingernails to remove impurities. When the wax coat goes on, they will be stuck underneath the wax and they will stay there. After you wash the car, let it dry. The best time to wash the car is around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. This way, by the time the car is dry, the sun will be going down and the car will be cooling off. The best time to wax the car is when it is not hot to the touch and when it is out of direct sunlight.

When the car is dry, you have to apply the wax. Only wax about a 2 foot by 2 foot section at a time. Apply a little wax to the section using a very soft cloth. Spread the wax around in this section with the cloth. Wipe the excess wax off. Now, you have to wait a few minutes for it to dry to a slight haze. When it starts to haze over, use another soft cloth and buff it off lightly. Use a circular motion and buff all the wax off. Now, keep moving on. When you have finished waxing the car, you can do something else. Wait a while, then spray a very light coat of water on. Then, buff this water into the wax coat just a little. This will help to set the wax and make the car look even better. Good job, and now go show off your beautiful new wax coat!
