If you’ve been wanting some experience in the medical field, then you may want to think about volunteering with Harvest Methodist Fort Worth Hospital. There are volunteer opportunities in the following departments: Doris Kupferle Breast Center, Flower Room, ER, Cancer Center, Newborn Immunization, Oncology, Surgery Waiting Room, etc. Volunteers need to be 18 or older, attend an orientation and commit to working at least one four hour shift a week for six months. Volunteers are needed at Cook Children’s to help make the lives a little easier for children and their families at hospitals and clinics in the area. Even a little task such as reading a story to a child could make them feel more special. Other ways you can help are: holding babies, assisting visitors and pointing them in the right direction, teaching car safety, helping in the playroom and working in the gift shop. As a volunteer, you can work in the Research Room (greet visitors, answer questions, transfer calls, help visitors with things in the research room, etc), Archival Projects (preserving & describing historical records), and Outreach (give talks on how visitors can research records at the National Archives). Plaza Medical Center is another good place to volunteer if you have been wanting to volunteer in the medical field. You do need to be at least 18 to volunteer here. Do you like being around animals? If so, then you might enjoy working around them too. The Forth Worth Zoo has a volunteer program for teens and adults. Before volunteering, you will have to have an interview over the phone, attend an orientation, fill out an application, pass a drug screen and background check, pay a $40 dollar application fee and agree to volunteer for at least one year. You can volunteer at special events, in the office (doing office duties such as data entry, answering phones, etc), Gift Shop (work in the gift shop helping customers, stocking, etc), Education Assistant (help teachers with crafts and lessons), Docent (you’ll go through heavy training so you can give proper information on displays and animals to guests) and more.
