Where to Take Sailing Lessons in the Washington D.C. Area

Imagine yourself at the helm of a sailboat going up and down the Potomac river in Washington, D.C. or maybe cruising on a sunny Sunday afternoon out on Chesapeake Bay. If you have a love of the water, then do something about it and take sailing lessons from one of these schools in the Washington, D.C. area. They all have different classes of lessons, so you should be able to find one that is perfect for you. You can just take the basic sailing lessons and then decide if you should go for advanced sailing lessons.

At the Washington Sailing Marina, they have sailing lessons for children and adults. Adults can choose from weekend or evening lessons and you can learn basic sailing in as little as two days. Of course, you will probably want to go further than that. They are located just outside Washington, D.C. in Alexandria Virginia at 1 Marina Drive at Dangerfield Island.

Youth Day Camp (For boys & girls — Age 9 – 15)
All Camps run Monday-Friday from 9:30am to 4:00pm,
rain or shine, The youth camps consist of Pre-Camp Sessions, Basic Sailing Camp (Sunfish), Intermediate Sailing Camp (Flying Scot) and the Advanced Sailing Camp (Hobie 16) and there is something special for campers 12 or older and that is the Windsurfing Camp.
For Adults 16 and up they have the Adult Basic Weekend Class (Flying Scott), Adult Basic Weeknight Class (Flying Scot), Adult Basic Sunfish Weekend Class, Adult Basic Keelboat Weekend Class.

The Virginia School of Sailing in Virginia is an award winning sailing school with sailing lessons for adults. Start with the basic lessons and progress as far as you want to all the way to being certified to captain long cruises.
ASA 101- Basic Keelboat Sailing is a two day course for those with no sailing knowledge.
ASA 103 Coastal Cruising. You must have your Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification from the ASA 101 course Complete these lessons and you can take a weekend trip.
ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering These lessons will teach you all you need to know about living on board a sail boat on a longer cruise. You must have the Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising Certification from the two previous courses.
ASA 105 Navigation is a pre requisite for ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising. This is a three day live aboard class. The top of the line. They are located on the Chesapeake Bay about 100 miles from Washington, D.C.

Mariner Sailing School has sailing lessons for both youth and adults. You get two extras after you have completed one of their courses. A week of free sailing and half price weekly rentals.
Their lessons for adults are Adult Basic Sailing Lessons, a ten hour course, Learn to Cruise lessons and Private Instruction, The youth lessons are for children aged 8-15 and consist of Youth Basic Sailing and Youth Advanced Sailing lessons They are located at 1201 Belle Haven Road, Alexandria, Virginia 22307, just a short drive from Washington, D.C.
