Wedding Flower Topiary Cubes

Artificial Flowers

What did crafting people do before hot glue? Yeah, yeah, there were other glue products back then but none of them set as fast as hot glue. Thank goodness for that because now you can do many more craft projects than you could before. And, it’s going to come in handy if you decide to make your own wedding décor. Particularly if you want to make a large, floral centerpiece, table flower cubes and similar decorations.

It’s not expensive to purchase cubes of Styrofoam and they can be used to make lovely and unique table décor. Purchase green Styrofoam – used for floral arrangements – if you’re going to be using real flowers. To use artificial flowers use white Styrofoam. Hot glue does not work well on green Styrofoam.

There are many different things you can use as a base for the floral cubes. A thick, wooden piece from a craft store, a painted coffee jar lid – look around your house and you’re liable to find suitable things you can recycle into the plant stands. Using gold or silver paint can turn many ordinary things into spectacular creations.

You’ll find a huge assortment of artificial flowers to make topiaries which match or coordinate with the rest of the wedding décor. Although most any flower heads – sold by the bag – will work for covering the cubes, if you choose really tiny flowers, it might take much longer than you want to cover the cubes.

It’s up to you how many cubes you want to stack to make the wedding table topiaries. You can make single cubes or stacks of two, three or more, but you don’t want to build a tower. Three or four cubes makes for a pretty nice arrangement. Of course, this can vary depending upon the size of cubes you select. However, all the cubes you buy for the topiary itself should be the same size.

Using hot glue, attach one flower head to one corner of the cube. Finish that side by aligning flower after flower in rows, then row after row, until that side is covered. For all the cubes except the top one, you’ll only do the four sides of each cube, but you’ll cover five sides of the top cube. If you’re making the topiary with real flowers, wrap a floral wire around each one and push the wires into the Styrofoam.

There are so many options for how you can decorate the topiaries. Make all the cubes on the topiary from the same flowers or make each cube with different flowers – or make each side of each cube with different colors of flowers.

Display a tall topiary as the centerpiece on a reception table then create single cubes to set elsewhere on the tables. The floral cubes can also be made to give out as favors. They’re not expensive to make but they sure look extravagant!
