Visiting Las Vegas in August with Kids

Excalibur

Las Vegas is a place where adults and families can both have a great vacation. We traveled north from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas with our 10 year old grandson in tow. He was used to traveling with us and this was an adventure he was looking forward to.

I did a lot of research before our trip to be sure that I had the best possible deal. I chose the Flamingo for several reasons; price being primary along with the fact that at the time we were there it had one of the best pool areas on the strip. There are newer hotels that have surpassed it but it still is quite an impressive set up and when you have a 10 year old in a 100 degree climate it was a very welcome respite.

One thing you need to be aware of when visiting Las Vegas is that it gets very hot and yes it is dry heat but when the mercury hits 100 degrees no matter how dry it is, it is hard to even take a deep breath. Walking out on the strip in temperatures this hot can be difficult. We did walk to several other hotels that had entertainment that we felt our grandson would enjoy.

For a young boy Excalibur Hotel is a great place since it has knights as its theme. They also have a 4D ride Sponge Bob Square Pants that will give your youngster a great adventure ride. This is available for anyone 42 inches and above. The big attraction is the midway. There are games aplenty to keep your whole family occupied; it did wonders for our grandson.

From the Excalibur we walked to New York New York so that he could ride the roller coaster and of course check out their game room. While he and my husband played games I went to play the slots for just a sec and won a quick $100, it held me in good stead for the rest of our time in Vegas. One thing to remember is that children cannot stay in the casino; they can walk through but must keep moving. It was funny to watch the two of them stalking me but never stopping.

From here we walked to MGM Grand and had their lunch buffet which was quite good. We then took the monorail from the MGM Station to the Flamingo Station. It was a fun experience for all of us.

Las Vegas in August was sweltering but we spent most of our time in the air conditioned hotels and it was not a debilitating as I had anticipated. I did get a little more casino time, my husband took Danny to the pool area so I could play the nickel slots and then in the middle of the night I got up, got dressed and played for a little while. Las Vegas never sleeps and the casinos seemed to never close.

We only had two days so were not able to do nearly all the things that Vegas has to offer but I look forward to returning some day to actually see some shows.
