This Vintage Tin Can Collage box is a great way to reuse painted tin cans you have leftover form cooking. Painted tin cans are needed to make this craft project; the paper labels on can will not work.
This Vintage Tin Can Collage Box craft project is simply and should cost you $20 or less per box. The most expensive part is the wooden box. You can buy pre made wooden boxes at any arts and craft store, like Michaels. You cannot use a shoebox for this project. You will be using tacks to adhere the tin cans, and that will not work on a shoebox.
For this Vintage Tin Can Collage Box Craft Project You Will Need:
Painted Label tin cans
Tacks
Hammer
Tin Snips
Wooden Box
Felt

The first step is to collect some Vintage Tin Cans or tin cans that have painted labels. You can find these at almost any grocery store. Make sure the kids to find different shapes, colors and sizes.
The first step is to clean out your painted or vintage tin cans. Simply wash them out with hot water and soap.
Now, use your tin snips to cut open your tin cans. I like to cut up along the back seam after I have used a can opener to remove the bottom of the can.
Use a hammer or rubber maillot to flatten out your vintage pr painted tin can.
Now, Use one of those ready made wooden boxes you can buy at any craft store for the base of this project. You could prime or paint the box first if you would like.
Start by laying a piece of your painted or vintage tin can on the wood box and using a tack to attach it to the box.
I like to simply lay the pieces of tin can I cut out on randomly. You can hammer them down with a hammer or rubber mallot, but do not hit so hard you damage the structure of the wood box.
For a neat look make sure you lay some of the vintage tin can pieces so that they hand over the sides of the box. Use your hammer to bend them down to over lap edges.
Continue this process until you cover the entire wooden box. Your painted or vintage tin can should overlap, creating a layered look on the craft box. You can add as many layers of painted or vintage tin can as you would like.
To add a sparkle to your wooden painted or vintage tin can craft box you can rub a metallic paint onto the dried box. Wipe it off with a clean dry cloth. Allow this to dry for at lest an hour. For a shiny touch try mixing one part gold paint with two parts glaze. Brush this over the entire box. Wipe away any excess if necessary. Allow this to dry before you move on to the next step of this craft project.
To complete the painted or vintage tin can craft box you need to line the inside of the box with felt. Start by cutting a piece of fabric out to fit the bottom of the box. Glue it into place. Next, cut out pieces to line the inside of the inside of the box. Glue them into place as well.
