Vintage Metal Canister Lamp Project

Retro Kitchen

A Vintage Metal Canister is the perfect base for a lamp in a retro kitchen, vintage kitchen, or eclectic kitchen. Thanks to easy to install lamp kits you can do this project at home in no time.

I am always looking for ways to reuse the mismatched Vintage Metal Canisters I find at flea markets. Somewhere along the way these Vintage Metal Canisters were separated from their set, but they can still be useful in a fun home décor project.

Anyone who collects Vintage Metal Canister will love this simple and unique craft project. Vintage Metal Canister seems like such a waste to throw away.

You can buy a lamp kit at almost any arts and craft stores as well as at most hardware store. Generally you should expect to pay about $10 to $15 for the lamp kit. You need to provide your own small accent lampshade, light bulb, and lamp base!

To Make a Lamp Out of a Vintage Metal Canister You Will Need:

Vintage Metal Canister (with the lid)

Power Drill

Metal Cutting Drill Bit

Lamp Kit

The first step is to completely clean out the inside of your empty Vintage Metal Canister. I like to simply wipe it out with a damp rag.

Let your empty Vintage Metal Canister sit out and dry completely, everyone knows water electricity does not mix.

Now, take your power drill, with the metal drill bit, and drill a small hole in the back bottom of the Vintage Metal Canister. You want this hole to be right above the edge of the metal canister. This is where the electrical cord will be coming out of your Vintage Metal Canister lamp. If you have this cord coming out form underneath your Vintage Metal Canister your lamp will not be stable or sturdy.

Now, you will also need to drill a hole in the lid of the Vintage Flour, Sugar, Coffee, or Tea Metal Canister. This should be centered on the lid.

Install you lamp kit follow their instructions. Each lamp kit product will be different and it is best to use their specific instructions. Run your electrical cord out of the hole n the bottom of your Vintage Metal Canister.

Add a light bulb and a small lampshade and you are set!

Tips:

-Don’t limit yourself to regular sized Vintage Metal Canister. You will usually find the sugar and flour Vintage Metal Canisters are larger.

-A Vintage Metal Canister is great for this project. The paint tin can is perfect for a vintage themed kitchen.

-To age your Vintage Metal Canister try rubbing wood gel stain on it.

-Fill the empty Vintage Metal Canister with fun objects like sand, marble, or pea to give it a little weight. Stick to dry ingredients since this is a lamp!

-Don’t feel like you have to use real Vintage Metal Canisters. You can find great retro canister reproductions at Target and Ikea. They will save money and can be found almost at any time.
