Unusual Nativity Scenes, Ornaments and More

Have you ever thought of changing some of things from around your house into striking Christmas decor projects? If not, then it’s time to do just that! Kids’ balls of all sizes, empty plant pots – even a beach ball – can become pieces of your Christmas decor collection.

Turn a square plant pot upside-down, glue raffia all over it, and place a nativity scene on top. Or, lay the pot on its side, glue it to a piece of wood, and you’re ready to create something even more unique. Spray the pot white, inside and out, then create a snow scene inside the pot. Glue some trees in the background then glue tiny houses, mini skaters, or other novelties. The scene is all yours. You can attach lights inside for a luminous winter scene.

Cover a tennis ball in foil wrapping paper. Gather at the top and use a rubber band to secure. Tie a ribbon and bow around the rubber band. Attach a stretch cord for a hanger and you have a beautiful ornament. These can be made from small rubber balls or even balloons.

Some garland and a couple of beach balls will make a beautiful outdoor snowman. Tape white garland to the beach ball, going round and round with the garland until the ball is completely covered. After covering both balls glue them to each other. The arrangement will be somewhat wobbly temporarily. Use a piece of vinyl or plastic, like an old tablecloth or a folded trash bag, to encircle the balls, at the place where they join. This will form a belt for a snowman. If needed, tape several trash bags together, end to end.

Use an old hat on the snowman’s head, and use any number of things for the eyes and mouth. Painted cd’s are great for eyes. Add a felt piece in back to cover the hole. Giant pom-poms can form the mouth or you can use chenille pipe cleaners, foam, or other lightweight items. If you glue the bottom ball to a weighted plate the snowman will stand well. If not, you can tie string around the garland, here and there, and stake the snowman in the ground.

An empty ham can is perfect for many Christmas scenes. The can should be the type that is smaller at the top than at the bottom – somewhat egg shaped. Paint the can and make any Christmas scene you want to. Miniatures make it a great nativity scene, with a foil star hanging overhead, or turn it sideways and create a scene of kids on bobsleds going down a hill. Felt pieces are great for creating snow, trees – even kids.

Empty round ham cans make great pillar candle holders. Large pillar candles look elegant when sitting atop a ham can which has been decorated. Use paint, paint markers, faux jewels, Christmas fabric, or other craft items to embellish the can. Smaller cans are easily turned into candle holders for smaller pillar candles.

Use a glass, turned upside-down on a plate, to make a candy dish. Contact cement or super glue will hold the glass in position. Glue another plate on top of the glass, then another glass and plate on top of that. The pillar of plates can be stacked two or three high. Don’t glue a glass onto the top plate. This arrangement can hold candies, cookies and other goodies.

Got sandwich bags? Make a wreath! Clip the sides of the folded-down flap so that the flap will be even, at the edge, with the other side. Fold the bag in half lengthways, then in half again. Tie the bags onto a ring of any sort. Brass-type rings are very inexpensive at a craft store. When the ring is holding as many bags as it possibly can, unfurl the ends of the bags and fluff. Tie a bow on top and attach a hanger. This wreath is very cheap yet beautiful.

Have kids color pictures from a coloring book then make them into window clings. Just purchase a small piece of clear, thin plastic at a department store. Cut the plastic slightly larger than the colored picture. Dampen the plastic, around the edges, then place it over the colored picture, and onto the glass.

Take a look around your house and see if you, too, see ideas for making unique Christmas decor items this year. You’ll be surprised at how the ideas flow, and how inexpensive most of them are!
