Truck Drivers, United States Postal Service

Some truck drivers work for postal companies. Their job is to deliver heavy freight throughout the United States. Some of this freight may include furniture and lumber. Truck drivers need to be on the road for a long period of time. They travel frequently during the night, the holidays and during the weekends to avoid traffic delays. Truck drivers can make as much as $25.46 per hour, according to the United States Department of Labor.

Tractor-Trailer Operator
United States Postal Service offers this postal trucking career. This type of operation occurs during over-the-road service, city shuttle service or trailer spotting operations. Candidates must have two years of driving experience and a year of full-time experience with a 7-ton truck or 16-passenger bus. They should also have at least six months of trucking driving experience with tractor-trailers. This job takes place in the United States or in U.S. military installations overseas. A class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required in the state where applicants reside. Applicants should also have two years of driving experience and a good driving record. Last, they must past examinations and pre-employment drug screenings to get the position.

Road Driver
Road drivers work mainly for FedEx. They have to pick up and deliver trailers between Fed Ex service centers and turn-point locations. Road drivers have to operate a tractor-trailer combination truck, including doubles and triples. They also perform other duties such as pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment, verify and complete required documentation and reports, maintain accurate daily logs and comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures. Road drivers also have to load and unload the required freight. Candidates must have a class A commercial driver’s license (CDL), one to three years experience or completion of the Fed Ex Freight Driver Development Course and have a good driving records. They should also meet the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements, specified in section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations. Other necessary skills include the ability to perform basic math, written and verbal communication skills, the ability to lift and carry heavy weight up to 100 lbs., and the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.

Trucking Drivers
The Matheson Postal Services Company hires truck drivers within the United States. They are one of the largest United States Postal Service transportation contract carriers, according to the Hiring Truck Drivers website. Package deliverer drivers work either permanently or seasonally. They work eight hours or more during the weekdays, and do not work weekends or holidays. This fast-paced job involves lifting, carrying, holding and lowering packages between 25 to 35 pounds. Some packages may weigh up to 70 pounds. Applicants must have excellent driving skills, a valid United States driver’s license and the ability to operate a vehicle with standard manual transmission. A D.O.T. is required for this job, along with a background check and drug test. Package delivery drivers must adhere to the UPS guidelines and wear the company uniform.
