Top Three Mexican Restaurants in the Buckhead Atlanta Area

Sometimes you just get the hankering for a good taco, some frsoty Margaritas, or maybe even a monster burrito. If you live in the Buckhead / Sandy Springs area, then you’ve got plenty of choices in this arena. Suffice it to say, the Mexican cuisine found on most Atlanta streets is not anywhere close to the authentic dishes served in Mexico itself. But since I’m a big fan of the Tasty Substitute, I thought a few places would be worth mentioning.

– Los Bravos, Johnson Ferry Rd. / Atlanta

Atlanta natives clamoring for bona fide Mexican food will have to make do with the many chains of restaurants the city has to offer. One of those chains is called Los Bravos. Though there are plenty peppering the metro Atlanta area, I have found that the location situated off Ashford Dunwoody is my favorite.

Tucked into a Kroger shopping center, this restaurant is cozy and serves up all the traditional favorites with a dash of authentic flavor. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a real Mexican café, as the staff is comprised predominantly of staff from Mexico-making Los Bravos a great place to practice your Spanish while ordering.

The food is cheap and tasty, the average meal for two costing no more than $20. The no frills atmosphere is also a plus, as large groups tend to gather there for the speedy lunch specials. You can count on plenty of chips and salsa, and an atmosphere that is as comfortable as the food is “authentic.”

COLORFUL TEX MEX On the Border, Lenox Road / Atlanta

On the Border is yet another chain of Mexican restaurants known for its abundance of scrumptious dishes. The location of choice is the one found off of Lenox Road in Atlanta, in Buckhead’s busy business district. The eatery itself is vibrant with color and has a sizable outdoor patio-great for breezy and warm outings.

As for the food, plan on taking most of it home with you if you visit around dinner time, as the portions are quite considerable for one person. Dishes like the Chicken or Beef burritos, quesadillas, and fajitas are typically the meals of choice. Another thing that entices people to this incredibly colorful restaurant-is the trendy rotation of Latin music. And if spirits are what you’re looking for, On the Border is more than happy to serve up a dazzling menu of frozen alcoholic concoctions, in addition to their substantial stock of traditional cocktails.

The consensus in visiting this place is that the food is convenient and served quickly in this amazingly appetizing restaurant.

MEXICAN FAST FOOD – Moe’s, Roswell Road / Atlanta

The general public is well aware that the food at Moe’s is little more than a fast food cafeteria restaurant that happens to serve “Mexican-like” cuisine. Moe’s, which is a wildly successful chain of Mexican restaurants, has put a whimsical spin on their menu items.

A huge burrito consisting of rice, beans, choice of meat, cheese and salsa is affectionately called the “Joey Bag of Donuts.” Add a few more items to the whopping treat, and it’s called the “Homewrecker.” The great thing about the food here is the ingredients always taste fresh. And depending upon your taste, you can have your burritos (the most popular menu item) tailored to your liking. They are issued with a hefty serving of white corn tortilla chips. And each store contains a mini-bar of sorts wherein customers can choose from a variety of salsas to accompany their meals.

The location situated near the corner of Roswell and Piedmont Roads in Buckhead is known for serving mostly residential customers in the area; the quiet shopping center in which it’s housed is often overlooked by passersby. The Moe’s chain is famous for its easy catering options. And the menu also contains other Mexican favorites like quesadillas, tacos, and salads. Suffice it to say, if you’re eating at Moe’s, you’re not expecting a bona fide Mexican meal. But the flavor is just authentic enough to satisfy the palate.
