Top Ten Songs by Blind Guardian

Middle Earth

Blind Guardian is a German heavy metal band that formed in 1984 in Krefeld, West Germany. The band itself is credited as one of the most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal genres (according to Nolifetilmetal.com and Rockhard.de). The band’s lyrics are written by the band’s lead singer and are often inspired by famous fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkein, Michael Moorcock, Stephen King, and traditional folklore and legends from around the world.

Now, let’s take a look at ten of their most popular songs, in no particular order, and find out a little more about this long-lived metal band.

  1. Bright Eyes“Bright eyes, blinded by fear of life. No Merlin is by my side”

One of their more sensitive songs and a ballad, Bright Eyes portrays a very sad story about a little boy who is abused by his parents and escaped by going in to an imaginary world within his mirror. Much like the rest of Blind Guardian’s music, it is based mostly on fantasy. One of fans’ favorite songs. From the ‘Imaginations from the Other Side’ album.

  2. Mirror MirrorComplex and chaotic, this song is by far one of Blind Guardian’s most popular songs. It’s melodies are catchy and attention getting, with a lot of folk influence in the music. It almost feels like you are part of a battle waging somewhere deep within Middle Earth between the good guys and the bad guys. This is one of the first songs to really show off Hansi Kürsch’s amazingly high vocal skills. From the ‘Nightfall in Middle-Earth’ Album.
  3. Mordred’s SongSoft and less powerful that some of their other songs, this one has amazing melodies, chords, and vocals in it. One of their songs that has the most emotion in it, wonderfully performed by Hansi, as usual. It’s a nice change from their usual power-heavy chords and vocals. From the ‘Imaginations from the Other Side’ album
  4. The Script for My RequiemThis song is what Blind Guardian is all about! It’s fast paced and has those choruses that just get stuck in your head. Requiem is a very angry sounding song, Hansi pushing through the emotion flawlessly. At some points sad, the song does feel like a man is finally finding his requiem– his final hour, but at the same time has a very happy sound. His relief from the tiresome world, perhaps? From the ‘Imaginations From the Other Side’ album again.
  5. And The Story EndsA great end to an amazing album, ‘Imaginations From the Other Side’, Blind Guardian ends it with this song. Both uplifting and depressing at the same time, this song keeps you entranced from the very beginning. Having the feeling of some sort of march, you could almost do so yourself with how well this song pulls its melodies and beat together. As some might say, the song is pure power-metal.
  6. NightfallAnother power ballad from Blind Guardian, Nightfall does an amazing job of mixing old world sound with the new. With hypnotic flutes, bard like singing, and heavy beating of the drums, Nightfall is a treat for the ears. At some points in the song, especially around the chorus, the song almost has a chanting feel to it, as if a group of soldiers are shouting their war cry together as one. Everything about this song flows together beautifully to make one great masterpiece that tells a story in itself. From the ‘Nightfall of Middle-Earth’ album.
  7. The Bard’s SongBased off ‘The Hobbit’, Bard’s song shows off Hansi’s other voice, his more beautiful fluid tone instead of his harsh power metal tone. A little different than a lot of their songs, but similar to some shorter pieces in ‘Nightfall of Middle-Earth’, this one is definately beautiful without losing its rock feeling. A lot of emotion can be heard in the beautiful vocals and folk melodies. It’s a wonderful change of pace to their other works. From the ‘Somewhere Far Beyond’ album.
  8. BattlefieldFrom the ‘A Night at the Opera’, Battlefield has such a beautiful, yet fast paced sound to it. There is a lot of use of choir vocals in the song, which adds to the emotion and over-all sound, as well as the orchestra that mixes perfectly with the modern guitars. You feel like your a part of the epic battle taking place!
  9. MajestyAlso seen as one of their best songs, Majesty can be a little confusing in the beginning to most metal enthusiasts. It begins with a melody that reminds the listener of a carousel ride of their childhood. Then, just as quickly as it begins, the second half of the song jumps in to remind us what Blind Guardian is about. Not as fast paced as their other songs and Hansi doesn’t show off his full vocal range as he does in other songs by the band, but it’s still a treat to hear! From their ‘Battalions of Fear’ album.
  10. Age of False InnocenceBeginning with the full orchestra and nothing except Hansi’s voice and his back-up, Age of False Innocence is a beautiful ballad. It has a harder sound, almost angry and sorrowful at the same time. However, everything flows superbly and the transitions in the song are the die for. Oh, and Hansi’s voice, how could it not be mentioned more than once? From the ‘Night at the Opera’ album.

If you take anything from this article, please at least have a look at some of the songs! Blind Guardian is sure to please the metal listener’s ear.
