Top Ten Hairstyles of the Decade

Layered Hair

Over time and through the ages, hairstyles have come and gone. The way we wear our hair defines an era just as much as any other fashion choice. And there have been quite a few memorable hairstyles that have a made a mark in this past decade. Here are the top ten memorable hairstyles since the beginning of the millennium:

1. Straight hair with side-swept bangs has been popular through out this decade. Think Jennifer Aniston post-The Rachel, or every female star on Desperate Housewives. It is an easy haircut to maintain, and the style secret during 2000-to now has been ease and versatility.

2. Two-tone dye jobs made a showing, especially in younger women. This hairstyle involved often bleached blond layered hair over a darker brown base. This two tone hairstyle made a showing in the younger women of Real Housewives of Orange County.

3. Weaves for white women have been a big hit. Beginning with Jessica Simpson’s line of extensions and the affordable clip-in extensions popularized by Paris Hilton, we saw many women of all colors celebrating the use of hairpieces.

4. Disaster hair or the type of hair worn by women in such shows involving disasters feature unlikely circumstances for good hair. One example is the show “Lost” where Kate and Juliette maintained long flowing and wavy locks without the assistance of a blow-dryer. On the other hand we saw this same hairdo in Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Gossip Girl, where there certainly was a blow-dryer available.

5. Retro hair made famous by the beehive worn by Amy Winehouse or the girly bob worn by Kate Perry made the scene during this decade. The key to this retro hair was to make it look effortless and not overdone.

6. Drip-dry short hair, made famous by Ellen, Rachel Maddow, even at times Kelly Osborne and Halle Berry, was a standard this past decade. This gamine look was made feminine by shag-styles worn by Meg Ryan or punk in versions seen on Pink.

7. Bangs with all sorts of hair-styles were in this decade, from Amanda Peet to Ashlee Simpson. These bangs usually ended below the eyebrow and worked with straight and wavy hair.

8. Brunettes had a wow factor this past decade, as seen in the Charmed actresses, Angeline Jolie and Anne Hathaway. This ranged from deep chocolates to jet black options–this decade was for all ranges of browns.

9. Women of color wearing their natural hair, especially with some famous African American women. For example, both Oprah and Tyra went back to their true roots and featured fun textures that highlighted their very essence. We saw Ashanti, Solange Knowles, Whoopi Goldberg all go au natural.

10. Ultra blond also had a role this past decade, from the bleach blondes of Gwen Stefani, Drew Barrymore and Lindsey Lohan, to the natural-looking blondes of Duffy, Patricia Arquette and Portia de Rossi. The blond really had more fun this decade.
