Movies are large industry. Whether you see them in the theatres, rent them from your local movie store (or online for that matter), or simply buy the movie, we all watch them. They are a wonderful way for our families to spend time together. A movie is a common known outing for a date. So, here they are, the top ten movies of 2006, based on the money they made.

First, we have Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead man’s chest. This movie brought in $423,092,179 gross earning in theatres. This is an action/adventure film, rated PG-13. It is a sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The curse of the Black pearl, released in 2003. Johnny Depp is back again, as the leading pirate, Jack Sparrow. In this film Sparrow owes a large debt to the legendary Davy Jones. If Sparrow is unable to pay up the debt, Jones has threatened to curse him. Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner join up with Sparrow, to aid him in finding a chest, which is said to contain an enormous treasure. There hopes are to pay off Jones with this treasure.

Second movie of 2006 is Cars. Cars grossed $244,082,982 in the box office. In this animated film, a famous racing car, Lighting McQueen, ends up impounded after a cross-country adventure goes wrong. This is a film where the cars are the characters, there are no people needed. Paul Newman, Cheech Marin, George Carlin, and Larry the Cable Guy provide some of the wonderful voices of the cars. To add to the pot, there are even actual racecar drivers have jumped on board to provide some of the voices. These include Richard Petty, Dale Earnhart Jr., Darrel Waltrip, and Mario Andretti. While impounded Lightning McQueen ends up meeting a wide array of characters. However they are unlike his usual racing buddies. He ends up befriending a group of misfit, unused cars. Lightning McQueen even ends up meeting a female- adding to the story line. He eventually finds his way out of the impound lot- but will he be able to just walk away from his newfound friends?

The third highest box office of 2006 would be X-Men, The last stand. This movie brought in $234,362,462. The cast of this movie includes Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, and Kelsey Grammer. This is the third of the X men movies. It is based on the Marvel Comic books, X-Men. In this film, a pharmaceutical company develops a “cure” for the mutant gene. The mutant gene is the miraculous X-gene, which gives the superheroes their powers, and abilities. There is a large difference of opinion between the mutants on whether this is a “cure”, or an extermination. The cure is administered voluntarily, to any mutant who wishes to be human. However, a group of mutants, led by Magneto, see the humans cure as a threat to their species, and are willing to destroy the cure, by any means necessary. There are still mutants who believe in the boundaries of their actions, and the two groups of x-men end up in a battle to the death.

The forth box office movie of 2006 is The Da Vinci Code, bringing in $217,536,138. This movie is based on the novel by Dan Brown. It is a movie based on religion, and involves crime and thrilling suspense. The plot of this movie involves the controversial conspiracy idea about a conspiracy involving the Catholic Church. The Roman church has covered up the true story of Jesus Christ. They covered it up, during the formation of the Church, and are continuing to cover it up to this day. This movie begins with the murder of a curator, and the crime unraveling for a suspect. As the film progresses, the Holy Grail is brought into question, as is Mary of Magdalene ‘s relationship with Jesus. The cast follows a list of historical clue and puzzles to discover the hidden secrets of the Church. Meanwhile, an unknown person, the police, and the church are all trying to stand in the way of their secrets being discovered.

Superman Returns comes into the box office as the number five movie of 2006. It brought in $200,081,192. Brandon Routh plays superman, and Kevin Spacey plays his arch villain, Lex Luther. This film picks up when Superman returns to Earth after exploring his home planet. He returns to find, the love of his life, Louis Lane, preparing to be married, and with a son. Superman still uses his disguise as Clark Kent, the reporter, but must find a way to win Louis back. Lex has concocted a plan for the demise of Superman. The film does give you a brief history of Superman, which enables you to enjoy the film, even if you haven’t seen the previous one. The film progresses as Superman saves the world, and of course, Louis. Then there is a twist- Louis ends up saving him! Throughout the film, the plan for Superman’s destruction unravels, as a giant Kryptonite island is formed. Superman has one goal, to keep Lex Luther from conquering the world. But Superman must find a way around this island, made of his one weakness.

Coming in for the sixth box office movie of 2006 is Ice Age: The Meltdown. This movie made $195,330,621 in theatres. This animated film is the second of the set, following Ice Age. This film was originally rating G, but has since been rated PG for some innuendo. This movie is about prehistoric animals, and the beginning of the ice age melting. It’s a tale about their journey and adventures with their newfound world. At first, they are amused with the water slides, hot springs, and whirlpools. As the movie progresses, they begin to see the dangers of their predicament.

The seventh top box office hit of 2006 is Over the Hedge. It made the seventh place with a gross income of $155,019,340. Some of the voices for this computer-animated film include Bruce Willis, William Shatner, and Avril Lavigne. This is a story of a group of animals that have their first encounters with humans. They wake up after hibernating to realize a housing complex has been built around their meadow. After meeting a tricky raccoon, which has much experience with the human world, they begin to lose their fear of the humans, and begin their journey into our world. The animals put their trust into the raccoon, in order to stock up food for winter, and end up being deceived. He had different motives from the beginning.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby comes in as the eighth box office hit of 2006. Starring Will Ferrell, this is a movie about a Nascar driver, who grew up believing he had to come in first. His beer-drinking father taught this to him. After his father leaves, Ricky Bobby is determined to live up to his dad’s motto. Ricky Bobby makes his way into a top drivers position, but begins his struggle of the movie as a French leading driver challenges his place.

Coming in as the ninth box office hit of 2006 is Click. This movie brought in $137,340,146. This movie stars Adam Sandler who manages to get his hands on a universal remote. Sandler goes to the store, in search of making his life easier, with a single remote. He had no idea what he was getting into. He returns home, to find his new remote to genuinely be universal. After some “test” clicks, he realizes he can skip the unpleasant moments of his life, view his past, and even get in a few laughs. However, the remote’s memory begins to program itself. Sandler begins to realize that maybe skipping through the down times just aren’t worth it. The question is, does he realize it to late.

And the final top ten box office movie of 2006 is Mission Impossible 3, bringing in $133,501,348. Once, again, starring Tom Cruise, this movie follows the previous two. Cruise is a government agent. However, in this film, he has commenced retirement, in order to pursue a quiet life with his soon to be wife. Cruise ends up receiving a job, unwilling to say no, he begins an impossible mission. Cruise follows clues of a lost friend, in order to uncover a huge secret. Disobeying orders, and even escaping police, he finds himself in over his head. There is a rat within the agency, and unknowing who to trust, Cruise is doing whatever necessary to save his fiancé.

There are the top box office movies of 2006. There was quite an array of what made the cut this year. We had it all, from comedy, to animation, to thrillers. There were definitely some big names in the movies this year, and I’m sure we’ll hear much more from them. There is no surprise of the movies that made it to the top in 2006.
