As a fan of crime documentaries, I’ve seen my share of crime films. Here is a list of the top ten best crime documentaries.

The Thin Blue Line. This documentary tells the story of the murder of a Dallas police officer and how the wrong man was convicted of the crime. The documentary itself and the research for it lead to a confession by the real killer. The innocent man was later released.

Cocaine Cowboys. Learn about the trafficking of cocaine in Miami during the 1980s in this crime documentary. In this 118-minute documentary you’ll hear from the police and others that witnessed crimes in the area. This crime documentary tells how the drugs were brought in and the aftermath effects of cocaine in the Miami area.

Cocaine Cowboys 2. We’re used to hearing about men at the top of crime and drug empires but this true crime documentary has a twist. It’s about a woman, Griselda Blanco, the “Godmother”, who ran a cocaine empire. This documentary, which told from the viewpoint of one of her former lovers, is 99 minutes long.

Mr. Untouchable. This documentary is about Nicky Barnes, who was known as “The Black Godfather.” He ran a powerful drug operation in New York City. You hear from Nicky Barnes himself because he breaks his silence during this documentary, which is 91 minutes long.

Serial Killers: The Real Life Hannibal Lecters. If you have an curiosity about cannibalism, then you’ll enjoy watching this crime documentary. It profiles men, Jeffrey Dahmer, Andrei Chikatilo and Albert Fish, who got deranged pleasure in eating human flesh. Serial Killers: The Real Life Hannibal Lecters is 60 minutes long.

Very Young Girls. This documentary gives you a glimpse into the world of teenage prostitution, the girls that have participated in prostitution and the pimps that take advantage of the young girls. It shows a tale of violence, drugs and isolation. It’s a hopeful film as the girls try to get help to leave this life of prostitution crime. The film Very Young Girls is 81 minutes long.

Crazy Love. You’ll find a very interesting story in the documentary, Crazy Love. It’s about a man, Burt Pugach, who was so obsessed with his mistress, Linda Riss, that he had a man pour acid in her face when she decided she wanted to marry another man. You’ll find out what became of the two after Pugach’s subsequent conviction. This crime documentary is 91 minutes long.

American Pimp. In this documentary you’ll learn about the world of the urban pimp. Among the pimps discussed in this 87-minute film are C-Note and Bishop Don Magic Juan.

After Innocence. The justice system has its faults and it is very apparent in this crime documentary, After Innocence. This documentary tells of the people who have been found innocent of crimes they were convicted of and later set free thanks to DNA evidence testing.

The History Channel: Busting the Mob. In this crime documentary you’ll learn how the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the FBI, used wiretapping to catch a powerful heroin ring, the Pizza Connection as well as the Five Families of New York.
