Top Songs About the Weekend

Bay City, Radio Shows, Sam Cooke

If you live in a city where a popular radio station plays all types of songs celebrating the start of the weekend on its Friday show you may recognize a song or two from the list. However, some of these seven songs representing the weekend, whether as a day of the week such as Friday and Saturday, may not be played on your local Friday radio shows. All of the song titles have at least the words weekend or the days of the week representing the weekend. They come from different eras and genres, though one song was released this year. Sit back and enjoy the music that’s all about the weekend.

Friday On My Mind (1967) – The Easybeats

As mentioned earlier this is a recognizable song featured on Friday radio shows, especially during the rush hour commutes. This Australian band wrote the song about hanging out together at the end of the week.

Weekend in New England (1976) – Barry Manilow

It’s the only ballad on the list with an appropriate song title for this topic. One thing many people do on the weekends is take a brief getaway for a couple of days. Unfortunately the song is somewhat dated, though the piano heard throughout is beautiful.

Saturday Night (1975) – The Bay City Rollers

This was the Scottish band’s first number one hit in the U.S. They got their name from sticking a pin onto a map of the U.S. landing on Bay City, Michigan.

Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) (1973) – Elton John

Even though the lyrics depict a universal theme of celebrating on a Saturday night it was written from an English perspective. This raucous tune has an attention-grabbing intro to a catchy chorus along with descriptive lyrics. The song seems to be a throwback of the 1950s.

Another Saturday Night (1963) – Sam Cooke

Here is the oldest song released on this list, though it sounds just as relevant in today’s world. Cooke wrote this song while on tour. He has the best vocals of all seven songs about the weekend. This is an overall fun song.

Friday (2011) – Rebecca Black

Love it or hate it, most likely the latter, this song does meet the criteria as a weekend song in its title and lame lyrics. Granted, the music video is amatuerish with its obvious non-actors (especially the car scene with those girls sitting on the back top of the convertible). If you can handle Rebecca Black’s autotuned vocals sounding like someone took a clothes pin to her nose, then play it to your heart’s content for the weekend.

Working for the Weekend (1983) – Lover Boy

By far the most recognized weekend song on Friday radio stations across the country with its cowbell intro and wild guitar riffs throughout. This is a true rollercoaster ride song from beginning to end. It is the quintessential masterpiece to get all excited for the weekend.
