Tom Hanks is an incredibly talented actor. His acting and producing lists are long. Hanks, who was born July 9, 1956, has won several Academy Awards. His role as Andrew Beckett in 1993’s Philadelphia and his role as Forrest in Forrest Gump (1994) both earned him the Best Actor awards. He has also been nominated for the Academy Award in several other movies, including 1988’s Big, Saving Private Ryan (1999), and Cast Away (2000), where he gained and lost fifty pounds in order to play a character stranded on a deserted island. Hanks has been in so many movies, it is difficult to pick out his top films. Hanks has said of his acting career, “I’ve made over twenty movies and five of them are good”. Tom Hanks’ acting career dates pretty far back. One of his first films was 1980’s “He Knows You’re Alone”. The horror film followed a bride as a serial killer stalked her. More recently, Hanks has been in several romantic comedies. Three of these also featured Meg Ryan, including 1990’s Joe Versus the Volcano. The two were paired in 1993’s Sleepless in Seattle, in which Hanks’ character has recently lost his wife and his son tries to find him a new wife. Ryan becomes the candidate. The romantic comedy was and still is very popular. The third pairing for Hanks and Ryan was in 1998’s You’ve Got Mail. This time the two have an online friendship through AOL’s instant messenger and email. All three films are terrific. Hanks has also performed in several other comedic films, including 1984’s Splash and 1988’s Big, where he plays a child in a man’s body.

Another favorite Tom Hanks film is 1992’s A League of Their Own, in which he portrays a former baseball player roped into coaching women’s baseball. Hanks has also been in his fair share of dramatic movies. The most recent is the 2006 controversial film, The DaVinci Code. 1999’s Saving Private Ryan is a very realistic war film. In 1995 he played an astronaut in Apollo 13, which is based on the true-life events. 1999’s Green Mile and 2002’s Catch Me If You Can are two more superb dramatic films.

Acting is not all Hanks does. He took his first director role in 1996’s That Thing You Do, a movie that he acted in as well. He also had a behind the scenes role in the 1998 HBO mini series From The Earth To The Moon. Hanks has even loaned his voice to several animated films, including 2004’s The Polar Express. More popular were the Toy Story films. 1995’s Toy Story and 1999’s Toy Story 2 both featured Tom Hanks’ voice as Woody.
