There are many universities out there today, but just a few of them stand above the rest in terms of education, work connections and reputation. In this article I plan to cover the top 5 universities for the career choice of software engineering. Lets get right into it shall we, I’m sure you are eager to see how they rate.

First ranked school for software engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

MIT is a university based out of Massachusetts, and as the name would suggest it’s focus is in information and technology. MIT has a great software engineering course, you can find a class syllabus from their fall quarter in 2009 here.

MIT admission processes are a bit different then most, you do not get to select your profession until your junior year at MIT. The first year you will take a group of foundation courses intended to give you a basis, and background to further pursue your ultimate career move. This decision isn’t meant to be taken lightly, and as such MIT requires you invest in all careers for the first year.

While MIT is a great school, the best doesn’t come cheap, at $37,782 for each year you could buy a house for less then one years schooling. Second ranked university for software engineering, Florida Institute of Technology.

Florida Institute of Technology is the top rated school for software engineering according to US News. You can find a description of FITs software engineering course here.

FIT has a typical admissions process and contact numbers for more information are right on their website here. You will need to contact them and fill out an application for acceptance, but the admissions should be able to tell you a little more about their software engineering program, and the tuition.

Third ranked university for software engineering, Michigan Technological University.

Michigan tech is the second top rated school for software engineering according to US News. Though I wasn’t able to find a syllabus for Michigan Techs software engineering course, you can have a look at a vague overview of their course here.

Michigan Tech goes through your typical admissions process, and tuition varies based on your course choices, extra curricular, and financial aid. Fourth ranked university for software engineering, Milwaukee School of Engineering.

MSE is an accredited school covering a wide range of engineering studies including software engineering, rated number three by US news, and has a large campus you can see for yourself here.

You will find MSEs admissions department here and a virtual tour of the campus here. The admissions process at this university is the same as most other universities. Simply contact admissions to make out a plan for your courses, and they can give you a tuition quote.
