An electrician, or electrical engineer, develops, tests, designs and supervises the manufacturing of electrical equipment. In order to become this kind of electrician, a person must have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. There are various, highly ranked, reputable electrician schools in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), electrical engineers earn between $52,990 and $125,810 annually, as of 2008.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is one of the most reputable schools an electrician can attend. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts since 1861, MIT has an electrical engineering and computer science department (EECS) which offers one of the best electrical engineering programs in the country, according to an article on electricianschoolguys.com. MIT’s EECS offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in electrical engineering. In order to gain admissions to MIT, and EECS, a student must have a 3.9 grade point average (GPA), or better, and must have completed the American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) with high scores, 30-36 on the ACT and 1400-1600 on the SAT. According to the EECS website, a potential MIT student should also have demonstrated leadership and character skills.

University of California, Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is located in Berkeley, CA, a few miles from San Francisco. The college of engineering at this great institution is ranked second in the country, according to the Electrician School Guide on electricianschoolguys.com. The electrical engineering and computer science program offered by UC Berkeley’s college of engineering helps students understand and work with microwave electronics, solid-state circuits, optical electronics, quantum electronics, bioelectronics and much more. Because of the combination of electrical engineering with computer science, students at UC Berkeley also learn how to work with artificial intelligence (AI). Admission to this university requires a GPA of at least a 3.9, or better, and an SAT score between 1200 and 1299.
