Tips for picking out your child’s mattress

Mattresses, Polyvinyl Chloride

Choosing the appropriate mattress for your child’s bed can be very confusing. Since we do spend a lot of time sleeping during our lives, it is important to get a mattress that gives us all the support we need. That being said, here are some tips to help you pick out the appropriate mattress.

Size
There are many sizes of mattresses. Crib, twin, full and even larger sizes like queen and king. When picking out the mattress, keep in mind the age and height of the child. Like a child who is taller will benefit from a longer twin mattress so there is extra room to grow in the future.

Material
When you do find a mattress you like, ask what type of materials is in the mattress. Many are made from polyvinyl chloride, which can let off chemical emissions such as carcinogens. You can look for mattresses that are made from Green materials, such as organic cotton. Normally these mattresses are marked with a safety certificate.

Used or New

Your next option is new or used. When you buy a used one make sure it’s from a reputable store that requires sanitation before selling. It is best not to buy from someone you don’t know seeing as it may contain bacteria from the previous owners. It is said that used crib mattresses are linked to a higher rate of SIDS deaths in young children.Either this or a good friend you know and trust well. New mattresses are often sold on sale and may be the best option for your children.
