Three Basic Summer Jello Shots

Black Cherry, Jello Shots

Some of my favorite memories of living around Dallas, Texas include jello shots. A bunch of us from work would carpool down to Corpus Christi for the weekend several times during the year. We’d spend the day on the beach along the Gulf of Mexico, and the nights on the patio of my buddy’s parent’s condo. One guy always was the bartender, I think he had a secret ambition of working in a top nightclub instead of his daily grind in the cubical at work. I’ve even heard of jello shots being served at weddings in the bridal colors. Jello comes in a virtual rainbow of colors, so it’s impossible to not find a working combination. Some alcohols have colors as well and can be used to tint the jello in your jello shot recipe.

What’s a Jello Shot?

A jello shot is a mixed drink served in a cup of jello. All you need is a package of jello, water, alcohol, and a container. It’s just like making regular jello, except alcohol is added instead of some of the water. You can use any flavor of Jello and any kind of alcohol for your jello shots. jello boxes come in 2 sizes, small (3-ounce) box which calls for a total of 2 cups of liquid and will make 10 2oz. Jello Shots. The large jello box (6-ounce) calls for 4 cups of liquid and makes approximately 20 2oz. Jello Shots per batch. Consider making 4-6 jello shots per guest. Remember jello shots have as much alcohol as mixed drinks or beer. Make sure your party guests eat responsibly.

How do I make them?

Basically you follow the recipe to make jello on the side of the box. But you substitute out the cold water and add your alcohol of choice instead. This is true up to 100 proof alcohol, for more than 100proof you’ll want to use a ratio of 10 ounces of water and 6 ounces of alcohol. This allows the gelatine to still set up with the higher alcohol content. For best results and ease, though, it’s best to use 80-100 proof alcohol and just substitute it for the cold water in the standard recipe.

Jello Shot Recipes:

Before you make your jello shots, here’s some tips for the perfect result of your jello shot recipe:
1.Measure water before you boil.
2.Pour bowling water into pitcher or bowl.
3.Add Jello, stirring until dissolved – whisk works best.
4. 4. For absolute fool proof shots consider adding one package of unflavored gelatin to the mixture.
5.DO NOT add liquor till jello container has cooled to touch. Liquor will evaporate if you add while the mixture is too hot.
6.Measure and stir in liquor.
6.Pour into shot cups. You may want to spritz the cup lightly with cooking spray to make sure the shot slips out easily.
7.Refrigerate at least 2 hours, but overnight refrigeration is best.
8.Serve cold.
