There are almost as many different frozen pizza companies as there are types of pizzas. And the selection depends at least in part on the geographical location that is the point of purchase. I live in the southeastern United States so if one your favorite frozen pizza companies isn’t on this list it may be simply the case that it’s not available. Or it may be that I just don’t like that type of pizza. For instance, I’m not real big on deep dish pizza so two of my top three offer up thin crust, but the one deep dish that is on there makes what I consider to be the very best deep dish frozen pizza around.
3. Uno.
I really miss Pizza Hut’s priazzo. Anybody else miss the priazzo? It was around during the mid-80s and it was Pizza hut’s entry into Chicago style pizza. And it was dee-lish-us. Why Pizza Hut quit making the priazzo, I’ll never know. The closest thing I’ve found to a Pizza Hut priazzo is Uno’s frozen pizza. They are a thick, Chicago style pizza and I love the sausage version. The reason I usually tend to shy away form Chicago, or deep-dish or Sicilian style pizza is because the crust is too thick and chewy. Not so with Pizzeria Uno. The thickness and Chicago style comes from the toppings, which are stuffed inside. The sausage comes in great big meaty chunks that you can really sink your fangs into and the tomato sauce is absolutely primo, with a nice little kick to it.
Palermos pizza is relatively new to me; it’s only been available for a year or so. I love it because it’s got very, very thin crust, but doesn’t burn easily. Having said that, you do have to keep an eye on your Palermos pizza and not overcook it because once the crust does burn it starts streaming inward toward the center of the pizza very quickly. Palermos offers up a large variety of flavors including such unusual choices as Greek, Grilled Chicken Caesar and-for those delusional people who think pineapple actually does belong on a pizza-Ham & Fire-Roasted Pineapple. My preference is for the Supreme, which is as good as any supreme you’d get at a pizza chain. In fact, the Palermos supreme is also as good any the supreme of my number one choice, Totino’s.
1. Totino’s.
The single best frozen pizza I’ve ever had was Totino’s Bacon Burger pizza. Unfortunately, Totino’s quit making the Bacon Burger pizza a few years back. Or, at the very least they quit selling it anywhere in the south. That’s a shame because Totino’s is great pizza and the Bacon Burger was simply fantastic. The reason I love Totino’s is because they have a crust the cooks up nice and crunchy. It’s thin crust, of course, but often thin crust frozen pizza can be chewy. In addition to the fine crust, the cheese and sauce on Totino’s is top notch and the toppings have a great taste to them. For instance, the Totino’s Mexican style pizza has got a really flavorful Mexican taste to it, not overpowering, but underwhelming either like you find in most other Mexican pizzas. Totino’s used to make pepperoni pizzas that only came with pepperoni bits, but now they’ve moved to making full sized pepperonis. The only thing I don’t like about Totino’s pizza is the size. They only make them in single serving sizes, at least where I’m located. I’d love Totino’s to start producing large and extra large sizes, but there may be something about the way they make their perfect crust that doesn’t translate into bigger pizzas.
