The Taurus 1911 PT1911 .45

9mm, Quality Control

As I have stated before I just recently became interested in the 1911 platform of guns as I primarily use a Glock 17 9mm. The range I belong to lets you rent guns for free as a member. I often use this feature in order to test out weapons that I am thinking of purchasing. They just recently got a Taurus in and I figured I would give it a try since they show up used within my price range periodically.

Many people have probably heard that Taurus has had some quality control issues in the past. This was especially true with their mass produced polymer 9mm and .40 cal copies. You could honestly say most of them were junk. Their revolvers were hit or miss with many people, but I personally have had good luck with their revolvers. It appears they took the 1911 very seriously though and have many satisfied customers with that particular gun. The fact they are now willing to back it with a lifetime warranty does not hurt either. I firmly believe that the warranty is something that really needs to be looked at when purchasing a firearm. I see no reason why a reputable manufacturer of firearms would put a one or two year warranty on a firearm unless they know it will be coming back in three or more years.

The Taurus PT-1911 .45 is one nice weapon. They are made in Brazil. It features a high quality steel frame and slide. It is primarily available with a black finish but I have seen some in a stainless and two tone finish. You can shoot either single action or double action. The Taurus PT-1911 .45 has a 5 inch barrel and fixed Novak type sights. The replaceable grips are black checkered and are pretty nice for a gun in this price range. It has an 8 round capacity and will accommodate the higher capacity magazines in standard 1911 format. It weighs 32 ounces and fits really good in the hands. I have seen these used for $375-$450 and new for about $532 online. It comes with a hard case and two magazines.

The PT-1911 by Taurus is a really solid shooter with hardly any recoil. I would say it shoots as good as Rock Island and Springfield models. I put about 500 rounds through it and did not have any jams ( over 2 occasions). It chambers well and the trigger pull is just a tad more stiff than other models. It is nothing that would make this a bad gun though. If you know a gunsmith you could also probably have a trigger job done pretty cheap. I would say that the Taurus PT-1911 is more the middle bridge between the inexpensive Rock Islands and higher priced Sprindfields. Like most standard 1911’s, It is relatively slim and could be carried with an in the waist band for a concealed carry weapon or easily tucked under a jacket or vest.

There really is not a big drawback on the Taurus PT-1911. I will say that a lot of people are not too keen on the Taurus name because of the quality control issues they had, but they have seem to have fixed many of them especially with their 1911 line.
