After hearing dozens of radio commercials touting the gourmet quality of The Silver Palate® Thick & Rough Oatmeal®, I finally decided to try this product. Read about my experience and see for yourself!

Price and availability

The day I remembered to buy this, I was in Shop Rite, a major supermarket in the New York / New Jersey area. Shop Rite is known for great sales and low prices. I would have purchased this product regardless of the price. Luckily, it was on sale for $1.74 for a 16 ounce box. Normally, it retails for $3.49.

Product Description

The box notes that Silver Palate® Thick & Rough Oatmeal® “has a noticeably richer flavor. Richer, darker, fuller flavor than the most popular of old fashioned oatmeals.” I saw right away that the oats are larger and thicker than the store brand or Quaker brand oatmeal and they have a darker color as well. These oats are double toasted for extra flavor.

Nutritional Information

The label on the box states that this product helps reduce cholesterol. According to The Siler Palate, diets that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 3 grams of soluble fiber per day may reduce the risk of heart disease. One serving of Thick & Rough Oatmeal® provides 2 grams of this soluble fiber, so this is a great product to eat regularly.

Using water to make the oatmeal instead of milk is the best option if you are watching calories. Made with water, one serving has 160 calories, 3 grams of fat and 5 grams of dietary fiber.

Preparation

The Silver Palate® Thick & Rough Oatmeal® can be microwaved or cooked on a stovetop. For best results, they suggest stovetop preparation. For one serving, boil ¾ cup water and add 1/3 cup of oats. Reduce heat and cook from 8 to 10 minutes and stir occasionally. Let stand until it reaches your desired consistency.

I have never microwaved this meal because of the advice on the box that slow cooking yields better results. Your microwave must have a low power setting. Also, the bowl must have at least a 3 cup capacity. For one serving, please 1/3 cup oats in the bowl and stir in ¾ cup of hot tap water. Then microwave on low power for 9 to 10 minutes until thickened. Let stand for 1 minute.

How Does it Taste?

I loved the nutty flavor and thick consistency of this oatmeal. The taste was definitely better than the thin store brand oats I am used to. I usually mix something sweet into my breakfast oatmeal. I either mix in one tablespoon of granulated brown sugar or a tablespoon of calorie and sugar free Walden Farms Chocolate Syrup.

Conclusion

I give this product a thumbs up and recommend buying it to make as a regular breakfast meal. It tastes delicious and you can’t get any healthier than oatmeal.
