The Significance of the Rose and Its Color

Enduring Love

A rose can signify many different things and feelings. All the way back to ancient times, people have been giving roses to signify different things. They were even placed outside of the door in ancient times to convey “Do Not Disturb” or “Private.”

Ever been shopping for roses for a friend or loved one and been totally confused about what color to get? Maybe you are even shopping for your boss or colleague. What ever the relation or the occasion, there is a rose color that will be the most proper. All you need to do is think about the message you would like to send.

Some of the most popular colors of roses and the messages they send are:

Red: Just about everyone knows that a red rose is the universal signature of love. Did you know that it also signifies respect? Valentine’s Day would be totally lost with out the red rose. It signifies everlasting and enduring love and passion.

White: This is the perfect rose for young love. It signifies innocence, purity, humility and serenity. This color of rose is perfect for weddings, proms and other events where youth or innocence are celebrated.

Dark Pink: If you are thankful for something someone did for you, this is the color for you. It signifies gratitude and appreciation. Think about giving a dark pink rose to your best friend just to show them how grateful you are that they are your friend. Maybe someone was just there for you during a tough time, the dark pink rose will show them how much you appreciate their support.

Pale Pink: Giving a dinner party or having a house warming party and want to put roses on the table? The pale pink rose represents grace, gentleness, admiration and happiness. You could really dress up any space in your happy home with this color. You could even take them to the host or hostess of a party you are attending.

Yellow: If you want to show warmth or affection, you can’t go wrong with this color. It signifies friendship, joy and caring. There’s nothing like giving a yellow rose to someone just to show them you care. An interesting fact about the yellow rose is that, in Victorian times, it represented jealousy. Good thing that changed huh?

Orange or Coral: Are you passionate about someone? There are no better colors to choose, to show them that you think they are sexy or that they excite you, other than orange. It signifies desire, sexual attraction and enthusiasm! Whoa! I wouldn’t mind getting one of these puppies myself!

Lilac and purple: Do you think it’s love at first site? These two colors will signify you are totally enchanted when you are in their presence. It will show the person that you just flat out fell in love with them at first site but, you are willing to proceed with caution.

Peach: This is the perfect rose to give someone who has just experienced a loss. The peach color signifies sympathy.

Black: You would think that it would be wrong to give someone a black rose unless you consider them a foe and you are planning your vengeance against them. Oh contraire, the black rose also represents the death of an old habit and the promise of a new beginning. Give this rose to someone who just kicked a bad habit. I think that if I picked this color, I would have to give it with the explanation! You could also give these as a gag for an occasion like an “Over the Hill” party. Some people who are Goth also give black roses to each other to represent their love because it also signifies slavish devotion. Hum, would you give this rose to someone to tell them “I will forever be a slave to your love.” ?

Always remember, there is nothing wrong mixing colors. For instance, you may want to mix red and white if you are deeply in love with someone but, still respect their innocence and purity. The same could be said for a mixture of lilac or purple and white.
