The Pros of Living in Houston, Texas

Doggy Day Care, Houston, Metrorail, Sur La Table

Houston, Texas was named one of the best places to live because unlike many other American cities, Houston has not been affected by the economic crisis. More jobs are projected in the future in this booming city so it’s no wonder people are flocking down south. Houston has something for everyone and is a great place to live for singles, couples, and families. After living in America’s fourth largest city for over a year I have made a list of some of the advantages Houston has over the rest of the nation.

Weather

The winters are mild which means you won’t have to shovel snow, start your car ten minutes before you intend to leave the house, or buy heavy winter coats. Houston winters are like a beautiful spring day in the northeast – it is ideal weather.

You can wear shorts, T-shirts and sandals most of the year and save a fortune on clothing by not having to buy clothes for each season.

You can enjoy outdoor activities without being too cold.

Housing

Compared to the rest of the country, Houston is relatively affordable. It is not unusual to find a 2,000 square foot home with a yard in the $200,000 range if you buy in the suburbs.

Activities

Houston has a variety of cultural activities including theater, ballet, opera, a zoo, an aquarium, comedy clubs, cinemas, and a variety of museums. There are a plethora of public parks including an arboretum, and plenty of trails for walking, cycling and running.

There are beaches within 60 miles, antique shops, farms, murder mystery dinners, and even a magic show where you can eat and be entertained at the same time.

Houston has public transportation including buses that run often, and the Metrorail downtown.

There are two major airports within 45 minutes of downtown Houston.

Medical Centers

There are no shortages of medical centers and hospitals. Houston’s hospitals are well known and respected in the medical industry, and some of the top cancer treatment centers are in Houston.

People

People in Houston are generally friendly when in a public place. It is not unusual to strike up a conversation with a stranger when in a grocery store, at a restaurant, park, or at any cultural event – even in a public restroom.

Gay Friendly

Houston is as gay friendly as San Francisco. Some areas (like Montrose) are known for attracting homosexual singles and couples, as are certain retail stores such as Crate and Barrel and Sur La Table. And the best part is people are very tolerant.

Dog Friendly

Houston has a plethora of dog parks and outdoor restaurants in which dogs can join their owners. Houston has an abundance of groomers, training centers, dog boutiques, and doggy day care facilities. It’s almost impossible to walk down any residential street without hearing dogs barking.

Grocery Stores

There are a large variety of supermarkets including Kroger, Randall’s, Whole Foods, Central Market, Fiesta, HEB, and the Rice Epicurean Market. There are even farmer’s markets throughout the city and smaller convenience stores that are open all night.

Education

Houston has a plethora of universities including Rice University, the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, the University of St. Thomas, the University of Texas Health Science Center, Texas Women’s University, Sam Houston State University, and Houston Baptist University. How many other cities can boast that many universities in such a small area?
