The Pro’s and Con’s of Owning a Boxer

Boxers, The Boxer

The boxer is a faithful and beautiful dog, yet there are things to know about this sweet little puppy, for one she gets bigger. Boxers are so playful and energetic and they love to jump. They are competitive and muscular. They are called ‘boxer’ because they actually jump up and ‘box’ with their paws. They are very faithful to their owners and can be aggressive or timid, it all depends. They need to be able to roam and vent. They are ‘puppies’ until they reach maturity at the age of 2-3. If they aren’t allowed enough playtime they tend to become rambunctious and will tear the house up. They need to be around other dogs as a puppy or they may become aggressive toward them later, especially towards those of the same sex. Boxers can have two totally different personalities, it just depends on how they are raised.

Boxers come in a few different colors. The color fawn is very popular. There are also brindle, white and shades of red. The white boxer has a reputation of being def, but they are beautiful dogs. They may also have a masked face. Meaning there is black and white around their facial features that look like a mask. Some owners chose to crop their boxer’s ears and/or dock their tail. Doing this definitely sets them apart from any other breed, but it is a cosmetic choice. There is another boxer called the American boxer, who has a different snout.

Known for health problems, boxers have a fairly short lifespan. They only live to be about 8 or 10, if they are healthy. Heart problems, asthma and hip displasia are concerns to be aware of, as they are traits of the boxer. This is something to consider while shopping for a puppy. Boxers are known for snoring, flutency and slobbering. They are also known for their intelligence and great hunting instincts. They originated in Germany and were used for many things. Hunting and pulling carriages are some of their tasks.

A well rounded dog, you may say. I do not recommend them to anyone who has small children. Take it from me, I have three and I have learned this the hard way. Will I get rid of Sierra, no. Her personality and sweetness has made her a special place in our family. She loves to play rough. So here’s your heads-up. They are a loving yet energetic breed. Please have a huge fenced in yard and a strong willed determination to show them who is boss. They are very stubborn dogs too, I might add. I hope this helps you make your puppy purchase. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
