Danny Messer is a CSI Level 3 Detective 1st Grade and a Detective Investigator for the “CSI: NY” crime lab. He graduated first from the New York Police Department Academy. Mac Taylor hired Danny on as part of the “CSI: NY” crime lab after being cautioned not to hire him from his superiors.
Taylor’s superiors balked at Danny being hired because of his association with the Tanglewood Boys gang. Danny’s involvement with the gang was because he was brother’s, Louie, involvement in beating and killing a drug dealer in Atlantic City. While Danny was not personally involved with the death of the drug dealer, his driving the boys to Giants stadium on their way to Atlantic City is how he became associated with a gang.
This known association came back to haunt Danny during an investigation in a cold case. The killing of the drug dealer by Louie, Danny’s brother. Mac suspends Danny until the case has been solved to find he was innocent of any wrong doing in the crime.
In another incident, Danny was shot in a drive by shooting leaving him in a wheelchair for several months. Although doctors believed Danny would never walk again, he proved them wrong because he didn’t want to be confined to a wheelchair because of his wife and daughter.
Danny trades shifts with Lindsay on a snowy day. Adam and he goes to a warehouse to work a case. Both men are held hostage by an Irish mob. Their being held hostage is a diversion so the rest of the Irish mob can break into the CSI lab to get back their cocaine that was seized earlier in the day.
During the hostage incident, Danny is severely beaten. He had injuries to his head and spine. Danny’s left hand is broken during the beating. Adam steps up and helps take the men down.
Due to the injury to his spine in this incident, Danny goes in for acupuncture. His wallet, badge, and dog tags were stolen. All the items were stolen by Shane Casey because of the information about his brother.
Danny was kidnapped by serial killer Shane Casey. Shane wanted Danny to prove his brother’s innocence. When the CSI team learns of Messer’s kidnapping and Shane’s demands, they take the evidence they had against Ian to the warehouse to show Shane Ian was guilty of the crime he committed.
Danny’s wife, his fellow CSI coworker, Lindsay Monroe, married Danny before his being shot. During their marriage, Danny and Lindsay find Shane Casey, a serial killer, was following them while on vacation. Upon returning home, Casey breaks into their apartment. He holds Lucy hostage so he can talk with Danny. Lindsay comes to the door with gun in hand and kills Casey to protect her husband and daughter.
