The Many Healthy Benefits of Alfalfa

Alfalfa, Ibs Symptoms

Alfalfa is an herbal remedy I use often to help treat digestive discomforts and my asthma naturally, but the herb is also helpful with preventing and treating many other common health conditions as well such as heart disease and diabetes. This amazing perennial flowering grass like plant that grows in fields and gardens as foliage belongs to the pea family, and is used all over the world as herbal medicine in places such as Asia, France, South Africa and Italy.

Why is alfalfa use as an herbal remedy?

Alfalfa is used as an herbal remedy because it contains vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, digestive enzymes, phytoestrogens, saponims, sterols, alkoloids, flavoniods, coumarin, acids, proteins, natural sugars and high fiber. These powerful nutrients have cancer fighting properties, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-septic medicinal properties and the ability to help push toxins, waster build up, heavy metals and chemicals from the body naturally because of the diuretic and laxative effects it has on the body.

What health conditions can alfalfa help prevent and treat?

I use alfalfa daily to help aid my digestive system with the digestive process since I suffer from IBS. Taking my favorite alfalfa supplement daily, which is Nature’s Way Alfalfa Leave helps prevent my IBS symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating and nausea from occurring, but you can use any preferred alfalfa supplement you choose. The reason it helps prevent these symptoms is that alfalfa contains high amounts of fiber, enzymes and anti-inflammatory properties, which are helpful with keeping the digestive system balanced properly.

I also use alfalfa daily to help prevent asthma attacks naturally. Alfalfa contains anti-inflammatory properties, which are needed to help prevent my airways from becoming inflamed and blocked. It does work effectively for keeping my asthma under control but I must take an alfalfa supplement daily, or I do end up suffering form severe asthma attacks.

Some other health conditions alfalfa can help prevent and treat are kidney, bladder and prostate conditions because the herb does act as a natural diuretic that helps keep waste flowing out of the body freely while cleansing and toning these areas of the body efficiently. This is why many use this herb for kidney, bladder and prostate cancer prevention.

Alfalfa juice can also be used for preventing and treating heart diseases, strokes and heart attacks naturally because it can help reduce cholesterol levels, physical stresses on the body and keep the arteries healthy and strong with potent antioxidants and fiber.

Many women even use the herb daily as a treatment for relieving menopausal systems such as hot flashes due to the two chemicals in alfalfa known as stachydrine and homostachydrine that help balance the hormones in the body naturally.

Others tend to use alfalfa juice as an oral mouth rinse to help treat and prevent gum diseases, oral cavities and bad breathe due to the anti-septic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in alfalfa. I personally use the juice once in awhile when I am trying to heal up a canker sore in my mouth that just will not go away and it seems to help wonderfully.

Are there any precautions to worry about when using alfalfa?

Yes, alfalfa can be dangerous to take in high doses because it does contain a toxin amino acid known as canavanine, which has been known to cause a blood disorder known as pancytopenia. This type of blood disorder damages the blood platelets so much they do not clot or produce white blood cells properly. The good news is this disease is treatable if you suspect you have taken a high dosage of alfalfa by accident.

Alfalfa has also been known to cause miscarriages in pregnant women and allergic reactions in others as well.

It is extremely important to talk to a doctor or herbalist before using this herbal remedy to treat any healthy conditions naturally. It is also important to ask your doctor or herbalist for the proper dosage of alfalfa that you should take daily if they do say the herb is okay to use.

Since I have been on the herb, I have had no side effects and have found using the herb daily has been affective for treating and preventing my digestive discomforts and asthma naturally. I hope those of you who use this herb as well find some healing with it as well.
