The Difference Between Name Brand Foods and Generic Brands

Generic Brands, Name Brands

If you do the shopping for your household or even if you don’t you understand the concept between generic brands and name brands. Anywhere you go you can find the name brand of a product and then right next to it you will find the generic brand, usually from the company selling the product. Is there any difference between these two products? Some people believe so, as they will only buy the name brand product because they believe it is “better.” this type of classification between name and generic brands can be used with just about everything. From clothing, to groceries, to everyday products there is usually a choice on what you can get. But does this choice mean that the product will lack quality?

The name brand product is usually more expensive, and much more advertised then the generic brand. All of this advertisement is what leads many people to believe that the product is superior to its successor or generic brand. Is this right however? The answer to that question is no. First of all a lot of the generic brands we by today are made by the same company as the name brand, but are just labeled as a different brand. Take for example soup. A lout of soup today is made by the same companies, but some of the products are labeled as being generic and sold by a different company then who made it. The generic brand is then marked down a little lower then the name brand, while providing the exact same product. So when someone asks is there a difference between generic and name brand products the answer is yes. Not in quality however, but in the price. Even if there is only a ten cent difference, it is still a better price.

I believe that there is a time however when it is better to buy the name brand product instead of the generic brand, and this is when purchasing clothing. Clothing is obviously a lot different then groceries or other things that this classification pertains to, and is the reason that it is different. With name brand clothing usually comes better quality, but that is not always the case. The reason is that clothing can’t really be classified as name brand or generic brand, it is more classified by quality, and the better the quality the more known the name brand becomes. This quality of clothing is what gives us our different brands, or our name brands and generic brands. Like I said earlier I would rather but name brand clothing, and this is the reason why. You also have to keep in mind though that just like anything else the name brand product is going to be more expensive, but you get what you pay for. You pay that extra money to get that extra quality. This is not the case with most groceries, for example soup.

When it comes to buy name brand products or generic brand products the generic brand products usually win over with me. My exception like I stated earlier was clothing. Other then clothing basically everything is the same, just with different labels. Soup for example usually has the same producer, but the products are shipped different places for different labels to be placed on the product.
