The Best Large Shopping Centers in Louisville, Kentucky

There are countless shopping centers in Louisville, Kentucky. Some, however, stand out above the rest. Here are some of the biggest and best shopping areas in Louisville:

Jefferson Mall: Jefferson Mall has worked hard in recent years to overcome its former image of being old and outdated. Much of it has been nicely remodeled, with the most significant changes coming with the addition of a new and modern food court. Anchor stores include Macy’s, Sears, and J.C. Penney. Other popular stores include Hot Topic, Catherine’s, and Fashion Shop. Jefferson Mall is located on the Outer Loop, about two miles east of Interstate 65.

Mall St. Matthews: This shopping mall, once the largest in Kentucky, is simply known by locals as The Mall. It is best known for its two separate Dillards stores (one housing women’s and children’s clothing, the other housing men’s clothing and the Dillards Home department). Another widely known feature is the giant chess set located near Bath and Body Works. It is very entertaining to see people playing a game of chess using pieces nearly as tall as they are!

Other popular stores include J.C. Penney, Williams Sonoma, and Pottery Barn. Kentucky’s only Cheesecake Factory restaurant is a recent addition, and the Mall has a large food court. One odd thing about this mall, in my opinion, is that it has no bookstore and until very recently had no Hallmark store. The Mall is located on Shelbyville road, just west of the Watterson Expressway.

Oxmoor Center: Oxmoor is located very near Mall St. Matthews on Shelbyville Road just east of the Watterson Expressway. Anchor stores include Macy’s, Sears, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Other popular stores include Old Navy, Coldwater Creek, Pottery Barn Kids, and Waldenbooks. Oxmoor boasts some exclusive and upscale stores as well such as Coach, Brighton Collectibles, and the state’s only Von Maur. Dining options include California Pizza Kitchen, Yang Kee Noodle, and a large food court.

The Summit: The Summit was Louisville’s first “outdoor mall” style shopping center, where shoppers can park right in front of one desired store rather than having it all under one roof and a possibly long walk. Its largest stores include Office Max, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond, and a DSW (Discount Shoe Warehouse).

Other stores include Lane Bryant, Build-a-Bear Workshop, Pier One, and Victoria’s Secret. Restaurants include Max & Erma’s, Mitchell’s Fish Market, Quizno’s, and Q’doba Mexican Grill. The Summit is located on Brownsboro Road, near the intersection of Interstate 71 and the Gene Snyder Freeway.

Springhurst Towne Center: Springhurst has grown very rapidly into perhaps the very largest area of shops, restaurants, hotels, and offices in Louisville. It is located on Westport Road just west of the Gene Snyder Freeway, and is separated from the Summit only by a small residential area. Anchor stores include Meijer, Target, Liquor Barn, and Kohl’s. Other popular stores include Dress Barn, Books a Million, Kirklands, and Shoe Carnival. Dining options are plentiful; some of the most popular are O’Charley’s, Rafferty’s, Tumbleweed, and Cheddar’s. A person could feasibly complete all of their shopping needs in just this sprawling area.
