The Best Dog Songs Ever

Lobo, Peter Paul and Mary

There is something extra special about the way people are able to love and bond with animals. All over the world people have taken dogs in to their homes and made them a part of their families. The love that grows between owner and pet can be so strong that children often feel they have a brother or sister in their pet.

People show their love for their dogs in a variety of ways. Some people choose to make a constant companion of their dogs while others choose to spend the best part of their days with their dog right beside them. I love when I see people going the extra mile to show how much they love and cherish their pets. Few things can make me smile as quickly as seeing a cute little dog all dressed up in a sweater that their owner took loving care stitching for them.

It is not surprising that people come to love their pets so much that they are even moved to sing about them. Songs have been written over time to honor and praise treasured pets. Some songs are just silly and fun, meant to make people smile as much as the dogs that they were written about. Here are the best dog songs ever written.

Me And You And A Dog Named Boo by Lobo
This song is so cute and cheerful. You can really catch a sense of the joy that Boo brings to his owners as they travel. When Lobo sang of traveling and living off the land with Boo, it made us all want to pet him and give him a bone.

Shannon by Henry Gross
Shannon was such a sad song that I either had to turn it off or risk puffy tear swollen eyes any time I heard it . If you have ever lost a dog, it is all too easy to relate to the torment Henry was going through when he lost Shannon. Get out your tissue before giving this great tune a listen.

Bingo – obscure origin
It may not be very clear where this song got started but, every dog owner knows the words. Bingo must have been one heck of a dog. All you have to do is start spelling out his name and someone will surely start singing. There is not much more you need to know about the song except that there was a dog named Bingo and Bingo was his name.

Mr Bojangles by Jerry Jeff Walker
Mr Bojangles was known for his dancing. It is a great tune with a melody that is easy to remember. What dog lovers will remember most about this song is that once the dog died, Mr Bojangles grieved for more than twenty years. The song is sad but it is still one of the best dog songs ever.

Walking The Dog by Rufus Thomas
Here is a fun dog song that is introducing a dance in the lyrics. I can only imagine the fun it must have been to create this dance in honor of walking a dog. Next time you take your pet out for a walk, you might want to be sure you have this tune ready to play on your headphones.

How Much Is That Doggy In The Window by Bob Merrill
I am sure there are many families that can remember the moment they first saw their doggy in a pet shop window. What a treasure it is to have a song that captures the fun of that first moment. This is an old dog tune so dig out the old records and give it a listen. It is sure to make you smile.

Hound Dog by Elvis Presley
This is the dog song that will get you up dancing and howling. Elvis wasn’t the first person to ever sing this song but he sure did a fine job. Be sure to shoot a funny scowl at your dog when you sing this song to him, especially if he is a loved but lazy dog.

The Puppy Song by Harry Nillson
Harry thought he would be lucky to have a puppy. Those of us that are lucky enough to have one already know that he was perfectly right. This puppy song is just too cute for words. Find it and listen to it any time you need a smile.

Blue by Peter, Paul and Mary
The name of this dog song is enough to make most people smile and remember a favorite dog. When an owner calls out for a dog to come to them and the dog comes running, there is a joyful trust that can’t be beat between them. When Peter, Paul and Mary sing about calling for Blue it is just beautiful.

Puppy Love by Donny Osmond
It may be true that this song is not really written about puppies. That doesn’t matter at all. Anyone that has ever held a puppy and felt the joy they bring, will get a kick out of listening to this song. Be sure to add this tune and all of the others to your play list for the next time you take your dog out for a walk.
