The Basic Types of Home Windows

Many homes have windows that are square. They are simple but boring. There are many different types of windows that you can have in your home. Updated windows can make an enormous difference in the way your home looks and feels, and even in the way you feel about your own home. A boring and unnoticed home can become the talk of the town and the envy of the neighbors with new, interesting windows.

Fixed windows cannot be opened. These windows are most suited for higher locations where windows are not normally opened anyway. An example could be an attic window, or a window that is located near the top of a room simply to let in more natural light. These windows are normally very inexpensive.

Double hung windows are probably the most common windows. These kinds of windows are great for period homes. They are made up of two sashes that can be moved up or down, so you can open the window from the top or the bottom. Keep in mind that only half the window can be open at a time.

A casement window is another common window that looks beautiful in a home. These windows are hinged vertically. You can swing the in and out like a door and you open and close them by using a crank. A similar window is the awning window, which works via crank like the casement window but awning windows are horizontally hinged.

Jalousie windows were very popular in the mid-century but have fallen out of favor in modern day. These are horizontally placed glass strips that are very narrow, and you lower them using a crank.

Another popular kind of window is the sliding window. These windows move on bottom and top tracks. They can be very inexpensive and are wonderful for use in a room such as a family room or a den. They are also good for sun rooms.

Paladian windows are not as common but they are beautiful. These windows are groups of three windows that have an arch over the center. They’ve gained popularity in the last ten years because they add a great deal of drama and visual interest to a home. They can literally transform a home into a showpiece.

Picture windows are often used in ranch-style homes. These windows are large and fixed, giving you a great view outside. To add interest and personality, these types of windows are usually flanked by double hung windows or casement windows.

Clerestory windows are types of windows popular in Craftsman homes. These have a strip of small, horizontal panes high on the wall, near the ceiling. They’re great for letting light into a room.

Arched or elliptical windows are types of windows that are usually placed over fixed or double hung windows in order to add a bit of spark to the home. They are also great for letting in natural light.Sears Home Improvements offers quality home renovation services including installation of many Types of Home Windows, Please visit our Home Improvements website or call us at 1-877-587-1990 for more information today.
