TeaCup Pigs

Mini Pigs, Potbellied Pigs, Teacup Pig

The dog – man’s best friend. Or so the saying goes. What about this little piggy? Up on the rise are teacup pigs, better known as the mini potbellied pig. In Europe, the teacup pig has become the new household pet. Most people think of the farm pig, waddling in mud but these little pigs, when born, are so tiny they actually can fit in a tea cup. A full grown pig can weigh up to 800 pounds, a mature regular potbellied pig can weigh up to 200 pounds, but these special little mini pigs when full grown weigh between 30 and 65 pounds!

So why a pig? For one, they do not bark! They do not shed! They have no odor, nor do they attract fleas. For a pig, they are very clean animals! Pigs make great pets for those living in cities, or high-rise apartments since they are small in nature. A full grown teacup pig is equivalent to the size of a cocker spaniel. Some mini pigs are even smaller and only weigh 25 to 35 pounds, depending on breed. These teacups can be littered trained in just a couple of days.

How do you care for your mini pig? These little pigs require the same kind of care as any dog or cat. Lots of love and affection, but even more, they love attention! They will lay around and gain weight if they do not get enough exercise, so it is very important to walk your pig every day on a leash. These little mini pigs will also eat all day long so be sure not to leave food about, especially if you have other pets as well. The initial trip to the vet will require a vaccine, but it is not necessary to have one each year, just a yearly check up, unless of course you feel something is wrong. Keep in mind because of their little short legs, stairs can be an issue. Just like a toddler, you must “child proof” your dwelling if need be.

What can a mini pig do? Just like a dog, you can train your teacup pig. They can do tricks, fetch and learn commands. Always praise your teacup when he does something good, just as you would any pet.

Can anyone raise a mini pig? No, unfortunately. These little pigs are not legal in all states, such as New York. Your area may not be zoned for them. Before you decide a teacup pig is for you, make sure your local veterinarian is equipped to handle him.

What do you feed a teacup pig? These little pigs will eat just about anything and love sweets so be sure to limit these. An over-weight pig will become lazy and get larger. It is imperative to keep them active. Pig feed can be purchased at pet stores, feed stores and can be special ordered.

How do you get one? Mini potbellied pigs are quite expensive and can cost $2,000 each. They were available in England only, but through Google you can search to see if any are for sale in the United States. They are unique, high in demand and very hard to come by.
