Super Hero Cape Pattern

Sew a homemade super hero cape for your youngster using two large bath towels or cotton blend fabric. Whether the cape is for everyday play or to use as a Halloween costume, your child will enjoy wearing this easy to make super hero cape. Knowledge of basic sewing is required. Set aside approximately 45 minutes to complete the project. My grandchildren just love to play with their super hero capes!

The picture attached to this article is a small version of the cape pattern. The cape pattern is placed on a 17.5-inch fold. The length of the pattern is 22.5-inches which is not long enough for the super hero cape. Measure the length from the child’s neck to the desired bottom edge of the cape to determine the appropriate length for the pattern – measure from the bottom of the curved line on the super hero cape pattern to create the required cape length.

Things You’ll Need:

1 super hero cape pattern – see attached picture, print
2 bath towels 40”-70″ or 1 to 3 yards of cotton blend fabric
1 tape measure
Straight pins
Scissors
1 sewing machine
Thread
1 iron
1 ironing board
1-inch Velcro, 2-inches long. Sew-on or press-on are both acceptable

Instructions:

Step 1 – Print the pattern included this article. Enlarge the pattern to measure 17 and a 1/2-inches across and 22 and 1/5-inches from the top of the curve to the bottom edge of the pattern.

Step 2 – Measure the distance from the back of the child’s neck to approximately 3-inches below the knee. Measure from the bottom curve on the pattern and add the length to the edges. This individualizes the pattern for a child of any height.

Step 3 – Fold a 40” x 70″ bath towel in half lengthwise. Place the pattern so the curved edges for the neckline are at one short end of the towel and the edge marked place on fold is on the fold line. Pin in place and cut. Repeat Step 1 for a total of two super hero capes.

Step 4 – Place the two sides of the cape so the right sides or front sides are facing one another. Pin around the outside edge.

Step 5 – Sew a 1/2-inch seam around the entire outside edge leaving a 3-inch gap in the sewing for turning.

Step 5 – Turn the super hero cape by placing your hand inside the 3-inch gap. Grab the opposite side of the cape. Pull the fabric through the hole. Continue pulling the fabric until the entire super hero cape is turned.

Step 5 – Turn the edges of the 3-inch opening under 1/2-inch and pin in place. Iron the super hero cape including the pinned area.

Step 6 – Sew around the entire cape 1/4-inch from the edge.

Step 7 – Secure a piece of 1-inch Velcro, 2-inches long under the curved flap section. The Velcro provides an easy closure for the child to open and close.

Tips: Add an iron-on appliqué symbol to the back of the cape. Create the iron-on appliqué using double-sided fusible webbing. Cut a piece of paper-backed double-sided fusible webbing approximately 1-inch larger than the desired appliqué. Press the fusible webbing on the back of the desired piece of fabric. Make sure the paper backing is toward the iron. Draw the shape of the appliqué on the paper backing. Cut the appliqué from the fabric. Remove the paper backing. Place the appliqué in the desired location on the super hero cape. Press into place.
