When I first began hanging out with my stoner pals I would often hear them talk and not understand many of the words they were using. I was embarrassed when I was asked questions I could not answer such as: “Do you smoke Haze?” or “What do you cop: Nicks, Dimes or O’s?”. It took me a while but eventually I got the lingo down. In honor of the up and coming stoner holiday of April 20th I have decided to make this easy to use dictionary to aid non-stoner’s in understanding their stoner friends. WELCOME TO STONER TERMINOLOGY 101!
First we should start with the basics, these are terms that you simply must know in order to be able to fit in with any group of stoner’s.
420– This seemingly simple number (pronounced “four twenty”) is the cornerstone of stoner culture. Its origins are still debated to this day. 420 either refers to the time at which its best to smoke (i.e. 4:20pm or am) or depending on its usage can be a code referring to marijuana itself. The term 420 is what has made April 20th (4/20) the a holy day to the stoner community.
Marijuana- The common house hold name for the plant known as Cannabis it is currently illegal to: sell, possess or cultivate in the United States.
THC- An acronym for Tetrahydrocannabinol which is the active chemical in marijuana
Pot, grass, ganja, reefer, MJ, Mary Jane, Sticky Icky Icky, weed, herb, bud, dank, trees, dope- All of these (and there are so many that they cant be listed) are code words for Marijuana. Pay attention the rest of the sentence to determine if a word not listed is a simple reference to this.
Second any would be stoner needs to know the methods of smoking marijuana and the terms surrounding these.
Joint, J, Bone, Spiff, Doobie- These are words that refer to the classic method of rolling marijuana in cheap cigarette rolling papers.
Blunt, Dutch, Philly- Refer to the method of emptying a cigar of tobacco and rolling marijuana in the cigar wrap instead. Dutch and Philly often also refer to the brand of the cigar used to make the blunt as well.
Bong- An elaborate method of smoking marijuana through a pipe with water in it
Pipe- An easy to use smoking device with no paper utilized sometimes Pipe can also refer to a bong.
Hookah- A very elaborate Middle Eastern smoking device
Third it is important to learn the terminology surrounding marijuana purchases, there is alot of street lingo here and these terms are sure to come up around groups of stoner’s.
Cop, score- To buy weed
Nick, Nickle- 0.5 grams of marijuana can also refer to the money spent on this amount of weed, usually 5 dollars
Dime- 1/16 of and ounce of marijuana can also refer to the money spent on this amount of weed, usually 10 dollars
O- An ounce of marijuana
Baggie- a bag of marijuana (usually plastic)
Dub– Twenty dollars worth of marijuana
Forth, it is crucial to learn the terms that refer to actually smoking marijuana this is because when you hang out with stoner’s eventually someone will say something like “Hey yall wanna burn?”
Burn, Toke, Get lifted, Smoke up, Blaze, Get Stoned- All of these terms and more mean essentially to smoke marijuana
Lastly you have to learn the terms that refer to the types of marijuana and the potency there of.
Crystals- The THC deposits on marijuana plants
Regs, Greens- Simple regular potency marijuana
Haze- High potency and expensive marijuana
Dro, Hydro- Very High potency marijuana which is grown Hydroponically thus it does not posses seeds.
Dirt weed, dirt grass- Old or low potency marijuana
Pretend dope– Buds that may smell like marijuana but actually are not marijuana or have very little marijuana mixed in (believe me no one wants this)
Bin Laden Weed- Type of marijuana that came out of Chicago, 3 different types of marijuana grown together; Extra high potency
Bubblegum- A strain of Haze Marijuana
Freeze-land- A strain of Dro Marijuana
Northern Lights- A very strong strain of marijuana
Purple Haze- A very strong variety of Haze popularized by the song of the same name by Jimmy Hendrix
Diesel, Sour Diesel, Sour- Strong strain of marijuana
Kush- Strong strain of marijuana that originated in India
White Widow- The strongest type of weed known to man! Rarely ever found outside of Holland where marijuana is legal but always talked about by stoner’s
G-13- A mythological strain of marijuana allegedly developed by the U.S. govt in the 1970’s said to be Incredibly potent.
Okay so now you have the basics, I have omitted alot because listing every strain and every term would take years. So go have fun with your stoner buddies and show them what you learned.
