St. Patrick’s Day Craft Ideas: Harlequin Shamrock Centerpiece

Bohemia, Terra Cotta Pots

If you are looking for a chic and crafty way to show off your St. Patrick’s Day pride this March, consider these adorable harlequin shamrock centerpieces. The use of patterns for the typical green shamrock brings new life to an existing tradition.

For this project, you will need:

– 3 inch mini terra cotta pots

– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White

– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Emerald Green

– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Celery

– 1/4 inch dowels

– Dark green colored cardstock

– Large shamrock shaped stencil

– Pencil

– Scissors

– Hot glue gun and glue sticks

– Elmer’s glue stick

– Bohemia “Together Harlequin” Print Scrapbook Paper (available in stores oronline at Paper Addict)

– Florist’s foam block

– Ruler

– Newspaper or drop cloth

Anytime you are working with spray paints and glues within a project, the first step is always to choose a work area that is covered with newspaper or a drop cloth and is well ventilated. Spray the outside of each of the pots using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Wait fifteen minutes before adding a second coat. Dry the primed pots for an hour or longer before continuing.

Apply one thick coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Emerald Green to each of the primed terra cotta pots. Dry the green painted pots for fifteen to twenty minutes before adding a second coat. Repeat this process until you have reached a desired green shade. Dry completely.

Lay the 1/4 dowel flat on your workspace. Spray the entire dowel with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White and dry for about an hour. Apply a thick coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Celery to the dowel. Wait fifteen minutes before adding a second coat. Dry completely.

Place the dark green colored cardstock flat on your workspace. With a pencil, trace two large shamrock shapes on the paper. Cut out each of the shapes with scissors. Lay the Bohemia “Together Harlequin” Print Scrapbook Paper flat. Trace two more shamrock shapes onto the paper in pencil, this time use the ruler to make them 1/4 inch smaller all around. Cut the print paper shapes out using scissors.

Mat the print paper shamrocks to the cardstock ones using glue stick. Dry completely. Heat up the hot glue gun. Apply a dab of glue to the back of one of the shamrock shapes. Adhere the shape to the painted dowel. Adhere a second shape to the other side of the dowel, making a shamrock shaped “pocket” over the end of the dowel.

Place a small bit of florist’s foam block into the bottom of the painted pot. Stick the dowel into the block to complete the centerpiece.
