Snack Review: Tostito’s Southwestern Ranch Dip

Frito Lay, Superbowl Party

My husband is the KING of junk foods. I jokingly call him a “junk food junkie”, and I guiltily admit that I love all the foods he brings home. Last weekend he made what he calls a junk food run to the store, and came home with chips and dips. One of the dips was a new product made by Tostito’s called Creamy Southwestern Ranch Dip. We have always been a fan of Tostito’s chips, so I was sure he’d made a good choice in buying this product.

Description

This dip comes in a 15.25 oz (4.323g) glass jar, and it’s made by the Frito Lay company. The top has a wide mouth, which is nice if you don’t want to dirty bowls, you can serve it straight from the jar. However, we pour it into a chip and dip serving set.

Most people are aware of what ranch dips and dressings taste like, but in my opinion, this dip doesn’t really resemble ranch at all. The product is quite thick, it’s filled with chunks of red bell peppers, tomatoes, and corn. It has a light tan color with red flecks from the peppers.

Thoughts

Frito Lay announced their addition of this new dip in May of this year, so it is a totally new product on your grocers shelves. The new dip is available in the chip aisle for $3.29, which is a reasonable price, in my opinion.

Ranch dressing is my favorite, and I love southwestern foods. This dip combines the two flavors with a winning combination. It reminds me of a taco dip, with a little kick to it. The texture is thick and creamy, although it does have some chunks from the added vegetables.

Like most dips, once it’s opened, it must be refrigerated. Frito Lay suggests that you serve their Southwestern Ranch Dip with their new flour tortilla chips. My husband purchased Frito Lay’s Frito Chips instead, and the combination of the two was very flavorful and satisfying. Too satisfying, I ate way too much, and the fat content isn’t what I would consider low. It’s not as high as regular ranch dressing, but I would normally consume more of this dip with chips than I would put dressing on a salad.

The dip contains two different cheese, cheddar and swiss, and I don’t see any flour ingredients on the label, so I assume this is a gluten free.

I don’t typically like overly spicy foods, and I can’t tolerate spicy peppers like jalapenos. Although this dip does list jalapeno peppers in the ingredients list, it is not one of the first ingredients, and leaves this dip tolerable for my taste buds. It does have a spicy kick to it, but I wouldn’t want it to get any hotter. Myy husband, on the other hand, loves HOT spicy foods, and he didn’t find it a bit hot.

We will definitely be purchasing this dip again. It would be great to serve to guests for a superbowl party or other get together. I’ve even used it as a salad dressing when wanting something a little different, and it really did taste great on a lettuce salad. Tostito’s has a winner here.
