Zyvox is a type of antibiotic that treats certain bacterias such as staph, strep, and enterococcus infections. It is an antibiotic that doctors may choose to use when other antibiotics will not cure what is wrong. Instead of killing the bacteria directly, it works on stopping the reproduction of more bacteria from growing and multiplying.

Your prescribing doctor who recommends this antibiotic should have your entire medical history noted on file. If you are taking any of the antidepressant drugs such as the MAOI inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, or SSRI drugs, the combination of those with Zyvox could be very dangerous and actually lethal. There are many drugs that may interact quite negatively with Zyvox, and your doctor should know everything you are taking currently including drugs that are over-the-counter. Many over-the-counter drugs have some very serious interactions with prescription medications.

If you have hyperthyroidism, blood pressure that is very high, or any adrenal gland problems, this is another reason that a person should be given Zyvox. Anyone that has liver or kidney disease, epilepsy, problems with bone marrow suppression, or low immune systems, Zyvox may not be well tolerated by these individuals. It will be up to your doctor determine safety issues with this drug and those conditions.

Another possible problem with taking Zyvox is the possibility of lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is the build up of acid in the bloodstream. This condition can be gradual and is a side effect of some medications as this one. If you are taking Zyvox and have weakness or pain in the muscles, your legs feel cold or numb, you have abdominal pain along with vomiting and nausea, and an erratic heart beat, you need to see your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room since this condition is very serious and can be life threatening.

If you are pregnant or going to be pregnant, let your doctor know, or if you are currently nursing. The side effects to the baby during pregnancy or in nursing are not known for sure with taking Zyvox, but it is best to still let your doctor know.

You need to take your Zyvox just as your doctor has recommended it on the medicine label. This is a longer term antibiotic usually taken for about a month period. The dosage is between 800 to 1200 milligrams daily divided in separate doses. Never double a dose of this medication if you have forgotten to take a dose.

Some people have a rare allergic response to Zyvox. If you are taking Zyvox, and you have allergic symptoms such as hives, having trouble breathing, and tongue swelling, you need to seek emergency help right away.

This drug can also have other serious side effects. Some of these are bleeding or bruising easily, pallor to the skin, rash, trouble seeing, chills, fevers, diarrhea, seizures, and numbness in the extremities. Some people have also reported a strange taste in their mouth. If these side effects are troublesome to you, you should let your doctor know as soon as possible.
