The Newport Aquarium, located in Newport, Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio has been hailed as one of the greatest aquariums in the world. With over a million gallons of water and thousands of animals to see, the Newport Aquarium seems like it would be the perfect family friendly entertainment in the greater Cincinnati area. In fact, kids of all ages, even babies and toddlers, do enjoy the sights and sounds of the Newport Aquarium. But is the Newport Aquarium a good entertainment option for parents of babies and toddlers? Here is what our family found out.
The most important fact to note for parents of babies and toddlers regarding a visit to the Newport Aquarium is that strollers are not permitted in the aquarium before 4:30 PM during the peak summer months. If you are planning to stroll your infant through the Newport Aquarium be forewarned that you’ll either need to visit during off months, or visit during “family friendly hours” which are from 4:30-7:00 PM Sunday through Friday, or 4:30-9:00 on Saturdays. Another option for parents of babies or toddlers is to use a backpack carrier. These carriers are provided free of charge for parents at the customer service desk upon entering the Newport Aquarium, which is a really great option for families with lighter little ones (up to 40 lbs possible). You can also park your stroller in this area to retrieve after your tour.
Keep in mind that the reason strollers are not permitted during these hours is that the Newport Aquarium is very popular, and thus quite crowded. If your toddler or baby does not like noisy crowds, the Newport Aquarium might not be the best destination. The stroller restriction does allow for easier movement throughout the exhibits.
As far as your infant or toddler enjoying the actual sights the Newport Aquarium has to offer, you will likely be very pleased. Most youngsters love watching the blue water and colorful fish move around. Just think about how many baby toys are designed to depict an aquarium! While your toddler may not get the chance to enjoy some exhibits such as touching a live stingray, the overhead water tunnels and full glass wall look into the sea will delight most preschoolers. Our son visited when he was 8 months old and again when he was just over one year. He loved both visits.

With children under 2 being admitted for free, the Newport Aquarium offers affordable entertainment for families of young children, with just a few minor inconveniences.
