101 Dalmatians, Dog Names, German Shepherds, Nitro, Yorkshire Terriers

According to the AKC, American Kennel Club, the most popular breed of dog in the USA this month is the Labrador Retriever followed by German Shepherd, Yorkshire Terriers, Golden Retrievers, and Boxers. Below, I’ve offered suggestions on appropriate male dog names for each breed.

Labrador Retrievers are people and action oriented dogs who think that they are a part of your family; when left alone, they can become bored and mischievous. The “retriever” part of their name speaks for itself; if a bored Labrador takes it upon himself to pile all of your clean sox onto the kitchen table while you are at work… just go with the flow. He built your soggy sox castle, one brick at a time, out of love.

Male dog names for a Labrador Retriever: 1. Xavier (meaning: owns a new house.). 2. Stanley (meaning: Gaelic – old hero.). 3. Gigolo (meaning: paid stud fees by the ladies.). 4. Trooper. (Iraq War). 5. Sir BarkLee. 6. Yowzer. 7. Visa. 8. Oreo. 9. Harpo. 10. Ziggy.

My favorite male dog name for a Labrador Retriever would have to be, “Tucker”. That’s a nice mellow sounding name that has a hint of artistic mischief in it. Or, perhaps “Einstein” would fit better? It’s not every dog who can spend all day laboring over art projects when he misses you.

German Shepherds are by nature hard working dogs; friendly, loyal, obedient, and protective towards their masters… If the master wants it, the master shall have it – this is their motto. German Shepherds will happily guard your home while you are away at work, they just require an instant, “good boy” when you get home, before you get your keys into the door. Giving praise for a job well done is what German Shepherds thrive on.

Male dog names for a German Shepherd: 1. Wolfgang (meaning: wolf fight). 2. Wraith (meaning: death ghost). 3. Bruno (meaning: brown hair). 4. Gunner. (Iraq War)5. Otis (who also got bored on the Andy of Mayberry Show). 6. Samson 7. Ingelbert. 8. Sigifried. 9. Zap. 10. Waldorf the Wonderful.

My favorite male name for a German Shepherd is, “Nitro”. I met a nice German Shepherd with that name once… He was guarding this auto-lot behind a chain-link fence. We had an understanding going on; I brought the milk bones, and he’d eat the milk bones when I flung them over the fence. His tag said, “Nitro”. This relationship went on for about 5-years until Nitro got old, and disappeared one day. So, nice German Shepherds are supposed to be named, “Nitro”. That’s just how it is.

Yorkshire Terrier dogs are short, long-haired, dogs who totally believe that they are ten-feet tall and bullet-proof. They have no fear of larger dogs, strangers, or children and often determine that they are the pack-leader to everyone involved. Poor Yorkies have the short-man syndrome going on; small, utterly adorable, and grouchy about life being this way. Of course there are exceptions to every rule…

Male dog names for Yorkshire Terriers: 1. Zippie. (Iraq War) 2. Viva. 3. Oh-No = Ono. 4. Fritter 5. My Mad Muttley. 6. Cedric. 7. Taz (short for: Tasmanian devil). 8. Growly (101 Dalmatians fierce puppy). 9. Prince. 10. Skeezicks (wolf is sheep clothing from Uncle Wiggly).

My favorite male dog name for a Yorkie is “Fang”. I’m sure that inside of that shaggy little pea-brain of his, this is exactly what he expects me to name him. I admit it, I’m a wimp. If that’s what the pack-leader wants to be called, so be it. It’s easier to explain the name choice to the neighbors, than to argue about it with the dog.

Golden Retriever dogs are everywhere in the movies and on television. They are those big lovable yellow dogs like, “Comet” from Full House, “Digby” from Pushing Daisies, “Speedy” from the Drew Carey Show, or, Punky Bruster’s “Brandon” dog. The Golden Retriever breed enjoys retrieving water fowl for their hunting owners, but they are also wonderful pets. These dogs like everybody equally and honestly love people. It makes no difference to them if you are the master… or the mailman.

Male dog names for Golden Retrievers: 1. Charlie. 2. Jeepers.3. Hottentot (meaning: Foreign Waterfowl; Anas hottentota). 4. Buddy. 5. Mr. P – (pleasant?). 6. Champ. 7. Metro. 8. Ozzy. 9. Harley. 10. Whisky.

My favorite male dog name for a Golden Retriever is “Gatsby”. This breed of dog is simply: Grrrrrrrr- eaaaat!!!

Boxers may have been named because when they stand up and play on their hind legs, they look like they’re boxing. Boxers are good with children, love their owners, and make pretty good guard dogs. A male Boxer personality is one of confidence; he knows his job, his family responsibilities, and just exactly what he can get away with when you’re not looking. These are very lovable dogs towards their family of owners.

Male dog names for Boxers: 1. Rocky. 2. Ali. 3. Diesel. 4. Rambo. 5. Gator. 6. Manny. 7. Dillinger. 8. BJ. 9. Dempsey. 10. Omar.

My favorite male dog name for a Boxer would have to be, “Banjo” shortened to, “Bojo”. Bojo is a short dignified sounding name for this man of confidence to hear constantly. You can say the name quickly if you need Bojo to come running in a hurry, or you can draw it out nicely if you are calling him from a distance. So, Bojo it is!

Other Helpful Ideas: If you are naming a guard dog like my buddy, “Nitro” don’t put his name where I can read it from the other side of the fence. You also might want to try for a name that I can’t guess while walking by daily for years… Perhaps, “Fluffy” or “Dewdrop” or “Petunia” for a male guard dog isn’t such a bad idea?

When you are naming a small dog with a big attitude, try not to give it a cute sounding name if you have small children around. Small children mistake the cute sound of a name, and small size of a dog, as a fun new toy to play with. You may want to stay away from all names that end in the eeeee sound.
