With my first child, I threw her a big first birthday party. I purchased glossy invitations with my daughter’s picture on it. We invited friends and relatives. There were games, cake, balloons and party favors. Of course, my daughter didn’t remember it but I have some great pictures. Now, my son’s first birthday is approaching. This year we have decided not to have a big party for him. Instead, we are having a small family party with about 10 people. Here are some things to consider when deciding, should I have a party for my child’s first birthday?
Is the party for you or your child?
For me, the first birthday party is more for the parents than the child. A lot of my friends wait until their child’s second birthday to throw a big bash. However, although they might not remember their first birthday, your child might appreciate looking back on those first year celebratory pictures in the future. Thus, no matter what type of party you decide to throw, make a point to take a lot of pictures.
Will the party be fun or cause stress?
With my daughter’s first birthday party, I spent so much time making dipped pretzel rods, cleaning and decorating that I hardly had time to take a shower the day of her party. I couldn’t get her to take a nap before the party started. Thus, she was super cranky and had “tired eyes” in all the photos. Still, it was great fun. This year, however, has been a difficult one. With the holidays and illness, we’ve decided to have a simpler party for my son. We will still get cake, balloons and have some games. It just won’t be as big of an event as past parties I have thrown.
How much money can you spend?
Birthday parties can get expensive. I’m at the point where we have met so many people that it’s hard to keep a party under 50 people. With this many people, even a simple party with a brunch and cake can become costly. Before you send out the invites, make a budget and see how much money you can spend per person. If you are on a tight budget, you might decide just to have cake and ice cream with the family.
Is your child used to being around a lot of people?
My son cries around some people he’s not too familiar with. He’s also not used to big crowds singing to him. On the other hand, my daughter has always loved lots of attention. I think it’s important for the birthday boy or girl to be happy on the big day.
What can you do to make the day special?
Although your child won’t remember the big day, a baby only turns one once. Thus, even if you don’t want to have a party, it’s important to make some memories. A keepsake present, a special cake and a birthday hat will delight your child.
