Sharon Stone and Basic Instinct 2 Big Losers at the Razzie Awards

Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone and “Basic Instinct 2” were the big winners Saturday night at the awards show no one wants to be a part of – the 27th annual Razzie Awards. The Razzies, which lampoon the excesses and failure of Hollywood, awarded Stone the prize for worst actress, while the sequel to 1993’s blockbuster won the award for Worst Picture.

The movie also was the winner of the Razzie for Worst Prequel/Sequel and Worst Screenplay. The last award was given to Leora Barish and Henry Bean, writing with characters by Joe Ezterhas. The film had been up for seven awards in total, including Stone’s nomination for worst screen couple. This nomination was for showing off what the Razzies called “her lop-sided breasts” in one of the film’s sex scenes.

Also receiving multiple “awards,” was “Little Man,” which took home three trophies out of seven nominations, and “Lady In The Water,” M. Night Shyamalan’s watery horror film, which won half its four nominations. The prize for the winners, should they actually show up for the event, looks like a dog turd, painted gold and placed on a pedestal constructed of mangled film. The trophy is made of plastic and come from the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation. The trophies cost Razzies founder John Wilson $4.97 each, Wilson announced during the show.

Two years ago, Halle Berry, a double “winner” for “Catwoman,” did show up for the event, but none of last night’s winners made the effort. In addition to multiple wins for the Wayans Brothers’ “Little Man,” “Basic Instinct 2,” and “Lady In The Water,” three other movies brought home “worst of” honors. Carmen Electra brought home a worst supporting actress Razzie for her roles in both “Date Movie” and “Scary Movie 4.” And “RV,” the Barry Sonnenfeld comedy, brought home an award in the newly instituted prize as Worst Excuse For Family Entertainment.

The Razzies were started in 1980, and have since grown into somewhat of a Hollywood institution, especially among critics. The event is held in the historic Ivar Theater. According to Wilson, the motto of the Razzies is “What did it cost and how much did it lost?” “Basic Instinct 2,” referred to during the show as “Basically It Stinks Two,” for example, cost roughly $70 million to produce and managed to bring in only slightly more than $6 million worldwide.

Wilson expressed excitement during the presentation, because of what Sylvester Stallone did this year and what he is scheduled to do. Stallone, who is a Razzie favorite, made “Rocky Balboa” this year, and “it didn’t suck,” according to Wilson. Stallone, however has revealed that one of his upcoming projects is the contractually-obligated “Rambo IV,” which makes him a “prime candidate for future Razzie attention,” Wilson said.
