National Cathedral, Patriot Day

There are several events around the Washington, DC area to remember the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Here are the big events that will be taking place:

Arlington Commemorative Observance

When: September 11, 2007, 9:15 am

Where: Arlington County Justice Center Courtyard, 1425 N. Courthouse Rd. Arlington, VA

What: To mark the sixth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attack the city and country of Arlington, VA will put on a memorial program in the Arlington County Center Courtyard. The honor guard will be present and there will be a singing of the national anthem. At exactly 9:37 am, the moment a plane hit the Pentagon, there will be a moment of silence followed by the ringing of a bell 184 times, one for each victim of the day.

Citizens of Arlington County are also being urged to display American flags outside their homes in remembrance. This is part of the “Flags Across Arlington” observance.

September 11th Anniversary Commemoration

When: September 11, 2007, All Day

Where: The National Cathedral, Washington, DC

What: The National Cathedral will devote its day to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Interfaith Service of Remembrance: Archbishop Desmond Tutu will lead an interfaith remembrance at 8am. The tolling of the Bourdon Bell will mark the exact moment of each terrorist attack.

Diverse faith Mediations: There will be hourly observances on September 11th starting at 10 am and continuing until 6 pm. Each hour on the hour all the names of victims will be read followed by mediation, music and a twenty-five minute moment of silence.

Prayer Vigil for Peace: The National Cathedral will be dedicating its mass at noon on September 11, 2007 to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The cathedral is inviting all of those people who wish to pray and remember the victims to this service.

Voices from 9/11: A Vigil of Faith, Hope and Love: This gathering will feature first-hand accounts of “altruism, compassion, and service in the wake of 9-11 with music.”

Message from the National Cathedral regarding 9/11 remembrance events: “*Prelude music begins at 7:30 am. No tickets are required. Please leave large parcels and backpacks at home. We urge people to use public transportation.”

Pentagon Memorial Services

When: September 11, 2007

Where: The Pentagon, Arlington, VA

What: The Pentagon will hold a private wreath laying and remembrance service will be held for the family of the victims that died at the Pentagon on September 11th. More information can be gathered by calling Mark Ward at (703) 614-4074

“Patriot Day”

When: September 11, 2007

Where: Washington, DC

What: Washington, DC mayor Adrian Fenty has declared September 11, 2007 “Patriot Day” throught the District of Columbia. The mayor is urging all residents of the district to remember the victims of 9/11 by doing acts of community service and by doing good deeds for others.
