Senior Activities in the Phoenix Area

Senior Dogs

Phoenix is a beautiful place in the haunting desert of the southwest. It is filled with lovely places to visit and a lot to do, but some seniors have lost their spouses and do not know how to meet people or find things to do. There are some things that seniors can do to begin getting out and enjoying life again with new companions.

ShowUp – Greater Phoenix’s Ultimate Fun Guide – Theatre, Music, Dance, Art, and More Seniors who want to be active have a lot of support in the Show Up group. It’s an online directory and information center for people to find out about cultural and entertainment activities in the Phoenix area. There are tabs for different categories so it’s easy to access what is of interest. Particularly interesting is the tab for Unique AZ that has a list of classes in and around the Phoenix area. Seniors can take pottery and photography classes or sign up for tours and trips. One couldn’t ask for a more complete resource for things to do in and around the area. The Special Activities gives links to farmer’s markets and zoo and sales events.

If you’re a senior who has a dog and would like some company when you take your pet out, there’s a group that would be a perfect contact. Not only will you have some company but your walk will be much safer and the dogs would probably get a kick out of socializing too! Senior Dog Owners, Senior Dogs Meetups, events, clubs and groups near Phoenix, Arizona Click on the topic Pets, then Dogs. From there you will find a message board to contact others who want to have walking partners! Just sign up to hear when a new Senior Dogs meetups start up near you.

Senior groups offer friendship, strength – Jewish News of Greater Phoenix The Phoenix Jewish Community has set up a web site to connect seniors who want to be involved with others in this group for any number of activities, classes and events. It has so many links and references that it will take you a long while to explore it. They have listed all the links and contact information for the area Jewish Community Centers, so it can be a “one-stop” location for any information that Jewish seniors need for services and activities.I found four programs, one of them just for getting into a walking group:

The CHAPS program is a coordination of efforts by several organizations in league with the city of Phoenix. Its purpose is to encourage health and good nutrition for seniors in the area. http://cals.arizona.edu/walkacrossaz/ They encourage people who visit the web site to get together groups of 10 and begin walking together. Click on your county link and find the information about forming a group. Seniors who are active in church might want to tell others about this program and start a walking plan ASAP. It really should be fun and a great way to get better acquainted with people you just slightly know. I’d suggest placing an announcement on the church or synagogue bulletin board and get ready. http://seniorgames.org/volunteers.htm Here’s something different! Volunteer for work with the Senior Olympics in Phoenix. This is a great way to meet some very active and fun people in the senior age range. they need all sorts of people to stuff envelopes, host events and assist at one of their sporting events. What a wonderful way to get out, do something interesting and helpful and meet great people along the way!
