San Diego’s Best Kept Secret: The 94th Aero Squadron Will Let You Step Back in Time

Air Traffic Controllers, Best Kept Secret

As a former San Diego local, I am about to commit treason. There is a restaurant that is so secret and so delicious it has to have “Open to the Public” listed on its sign. What appears to be a private club is actually one of San Diego’s best dining experiences. Every Sunday I spend in Florida, I wish I could fly to San Diego for brunch at the 94th aero Squadron.

The 94th Aero Squadron is one of the most unique restaurants I have ever been to. The restaurant is located right in front of Montgomery Field, a private San Diego airport. You can watch the airplanes taking off and landing. The restaurant also has headphones at some of the tables where you can actually hear the air traffic controllers conversing.

When you walk into the restaurant it is like walking into someone’s home, and the music playing is from the 1940’s. It feels as if you can step into another time and relax, if only for a few hours.

When you arrive, chances are you will have to wait, sometimes even when you have reservations. Don’t let this discourage you from partaking in San Diego’s best kept secret. Make your way over to the bar and order yourself the best Bloody Mary you will ever taste in your life.

I am not a big fan of Bloody Marys, but at the Aero Squadron, they make them right. You have never truly had a Bloody Mary until you have one of theirs.

The most celebrated event at the 94th Aero Squadron is their Champagne Brunch. For just over twenty dollars per person, you can eat all your heart desires, and drink all you can handle. The buffet offers an array of elegant fare, such as Eggs Benedict, a Carving Station, an Omelet station, a Crepe Station, Waffles, Muffins, Juice, and various side dishes.

I can’t forget the seemingly endless dessert table that is home to a variety of decadent indulgences. Service is impeccable, and don’t forget to give your server an excellent tip to show your appreciation. Also, brunch at the 94th Aero Squadron can be a lengthy affair, and it is good to make reservations in advance.

Before you leave, don’t forget to go outside in back of the restaurant and greet the various small animals that are welcoming you! You can also watch the planes take off, and sometimes you can purchase a helicopter ride that will show you the beauty of San Diego’s coastline. Or, you can just do what I prefer to do, to sit back, relax, and sip your blackberry laced champagne and enjoy the moment.
