Review of Spicy King’s Kimchi

Healthier Lifestyle, Kimchi, Korean Cuisine, Korean Culture

Kimchi is a nutritious Korean dish that is enjoyed by Koreans, and is gaining increased recognition in the west as well. Kimchi is an acquired taste for many people who are not accustomed to Korean cuisine. It can contain fermented cabbage, radishes and other main ingredients to make up this dish.

After sampling some homemade kimchi recently, my interest was piqued and I wanted to have some more kimchi at a later date. I came across Spicy Kimchi by King’s for $3.68 for the 427g (15oz) jar.

Low Calorie Food

Spicy King’s Kimchi is naturally low in calories and carbohydrates. The good news is that it does not contain any artificial preservatives or MGS, which makes this a healthy option for those who are trying to watch what they eat and lead a healthier lifestyle. I was pleased to learn more about the health benefits of kimchi and to try this brand for myself. But would it be as tasty as the homemade kimchi I had sampled?

Natural Fermentation

When I first opened the jar of Spicy King’s Kimchi, it started to bubble straightaway and to overflow. I placed it in the sink, so that it would not spill over onto the counter tops. This is quite a normal chemical reaction due to the fermentation that has taken place.

Nutrition

Each 56g (2 oz) serving contains 15 calories, is fat-free, cholesterol-free, and contains 240mg of sodium, 2g of carbohydrate, 1g of fibre, less than 1g of sugar and 1g of protein. One serving also provides 15% of the daily recommended allowance of Vitamin A.

Ingredients

There are just eight ingredients listed in Spicy King’s Kimchi which include nappa cabbage, garlic, spring onion, hot pepper, sugar, salt, paprika and ginger. King’s Kimchi have been using these ingredients for years to perfect the taste of naturally fermented kimchi.

Taste

When I bit into my first mouthful of Spicy King’s Kimchi I felt an overwhelming mixture of tastes and textures. The nappa cabbage was crunchy and the taste of hot peppers was quite strong. It took a few more bites to decide whether or not I liked the taste of Spicy King’s Kimchi. I must admit that it did not taste as good as the homemade variety I had tried. I also found it too spicy for my taste. I had accidentally bought the spicy version, which would account for the assault on my taste buds.

Recommendation

Although I found Spicy King’s Kimchi to be too spicy and overpowering for my taste, I would recommend it to people trying to lead a healthier lifestyle and who are able to handle spicy food.
