Review of ‘Life Will Write the Words’ by the Rocket Summer

On June 5, 2012, The Rocket Summer released their 5th full length album titled “Life Will Write the Words.” When I say “their”, I really mean “him,” because The Rocket Summer is essentially a one-man band. Bryce Avary plays every instrument and writes every word on all of his albums, and layers them on top of each other when recording. He then grabs some of his goods friends and musicians to play the songs on tour.

His newest album “Life Will Write the Words” stays on pace with his others, by being positive, up-lifting, and catchy. He preaches about never giving up and compromising who you are. The album starts out with the fast-paced “Run and Don’t Stop,” and shows that he is going to continue with this message. After “Revival,” he then moves into the upbeat song titled “Prove It,” which the chorus and clapping will be guaranteed to get stuck into your head.

After that he slows it down with “Old Love.” This then leads into arguably the best track on the album called “200,000.” The quirky, yet catchy, piano rhythm catches your attention, and the lyrics about being in a long distance relationship drives the song home. The song continues his anthem of love and to persevere through the challenges.

“Just for a Moment Forget Who You Are,” is a great song to help you forget about your past failures and to not let them bring you down. After this, “Circa ’46” comes up, with some fun piano playing and finger snapping. This song sounds like it could easily be on a musical. It then leads in perfectly to “Underrated.”

“Soldiers” is an excellent song to get you through times that are tough. When he sings about how you are making a difference in the world, even though you may never see it, will send chills down your spine. “The Rescuing Type” continues his fun and upbeat musical style. The album then moves into another stand out track called “Scrapbook.” It starts out with a beautiful piano riff and crescendos with a rock-filled ending. “Ashes Made of Spade” is a good song to finish with, and continues to infuse his Christianity into the music.

Bryce Avary is an amazing musician and it’s really tough to see him not get the exposure he deserves. His hard work, positive messages, and musical craftsmanship are something that needs to be noticed. When I listen to his song “Underrated”, I think it describes him perfectly. We all need music that gives us positivity in our lives, and The Rocket Summer is one that will deliver. I’m not going to give “Life Will Write the Words” a specific score. All I’m going to say is that it is an album you need to listen to. Then when you are done enjoying it, begin checking out his previous work, which is just as good.
