Review of 2007 Topps Baseball Cards and the Derek Jeter Mistake

Topps

Every year since the 1950s, Topps has come out with its standard issue of baseball cards. It seems that this year’s set has made quite a splash in the hobby world.

The reason for its abnormally high level of popularity this year is because of the Derek Jeter card in the set. The card was issued with Mickey Mantle and George Bush on it as well. Mickey Mantle is eagerly awaiting his chance to bat, while George Bush is watching the baseball game from the stands.

Topps claims that one of their artists must have pasted the images into the final card after the editing and review process. Topps, however, has allowed the sets that have left the factory to be sold. Buyers have gone crazy picking up packs, boxes and cases of the 2007 Topps baseball product in hopes of finding these Derek Jeter cards.

The Jeter cards have been all over Ebay since their release, selling anywhere from around $20 to a few hundred dollars. All of the early purchasing has driven the price of the 2007 product through the roof. While the basic Topps set is usually sold in boxes for around $50 or even lower, this year’s product is selling well over $100 at many merchants.

While the hunt for the Jeter card has become exciting for many buyers, my suggestion is to wait on purchasing this product for a few months. Eventually the desire for the Jeter cards will die down, and, as a result, the price on the product will begin to lower.

If you want one of the Jeter cards, wait on purchasing one of these as well. There is certainly a ton out there. The average sale price of the Jeter cards on Ebay has already dropped significantly from when they came out.

Amidst the Jeter card craze, the rest of the 2007 Topps baseball set has not been talked about much at all. The set has several nice insert sets including game used and autograph sets.

The top game used memorabilia sets in 2007 Topps are one-of-one name plate patches taken from the 63 players who participated in the 2006 All-Star Game and World Series Relics, which are cards featuring game used memorabilia pieces from uniforms worn during the World Series.

The Autograph set in 2007 Topps features players commemorating some of the top achievements of the 2006 season.

A new insert set called “The Greatest Generation” will feature players who served in World War II. The set will feature 30 different players and will have autograph and cut signature parallels.

The 2007 Topps baseball product will once again feature the Topps mainstay, Mickey Mantle. Mickey Mantle Home Run History cards will return with 100 total offered in 2007 Topps. Collectors will also have a chance at receiving 1952 Topps Reprint Relics of Mantle. The cards will feature a piece of game used memorabilia from Mickey Mantle and will be numbered out of 52.

While the 2007 baseball product appears to be one of the best Topps has released, buyers should wait a few months before purchasing the product. The price of 2007 Topps is inflated too much right now. By June or July, the hype over the Jeter card should have died down, and collectors then should be able to purchase 2007 Topps at a better price.
