Reglazing Bathtubs and Showers

Bathtubs

If your bathtub or shower is looking shabby, consider bathtub refinishing. This is a money-saving alternative that many homeowners are turning to, as it eliminates the expense of buying new and saves you from having to rip out your existing bathtub or shower, which can do damage to your walls that would have to be repaired. By reglazing your bathtub, you can save money, typically spending a fraction of the cost of replacing the tub entirely, and have the job done in as little as a day.

What does bathtub reglazing do?

Reglazing your tub will repair chips or cracks in your bathtub or shower, and it will recolor the surface a bright white (or any color you choose). This is an especially appealing benefit for anyone that has an unattractive colored bathtub that was once so popular. Remember those pink, green, yellow, or avocado green bathtubs? UGH! They may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but now…not so much. You can get rid of that retro bathtub, without buying a new one, by reglazing your tub. Once the job is complete, you will have what looks like a brand new bathtub, shower, and shower walls. Absolutely beautiful results at a fraction of the cost.

How is bathtub reglazing done?

The following is not meant as a guide. It’s is a basic explanation of the bathtub reglazing process. With that said, what will happen during bathtub reglazing is – The area will need to be sanded and thoroughly cleaned. It will then be masked off and drop cloths will be set in place. Any chips, nicks, or cracks will be repaired before the reglazing begins. The area will need to be well ventilated and respiratory masks will need to be worn. A glossy coat is spray painted on to the surface. Once the reglazing is dried, you will have a bathtub area that looks brand new. BRAND NEW!

Can reglazing tubs and showers be a DIY project?

No. While there are kits available that would allow you to reglaze your bathtub yourself, it is not recommended. The process of bathtub refinishing (reglazing) consists of using very strong chemicals and materials, and the application process is best done by someone experienced. In addition, the bathtub reglazing kits that are available at your local home improvement store, do not include the same quality materials that a professional would use. To be perfectly honest, a person that tries to reglaze a bathtub themselves could end up spending a great deal of money correcting mistakes, and they will have to put forth a lot of back-breaking labor. This is a job that is best left to the professionals.

Who can I hire for bathtub refinishing?

There are certain companies that specialize in bathtub reglazing. These professionals will be able to do the job right the first time, and do it quickly. These are the only people that I would recommend for this project. Check online to see if companies such as Bath Magic or Service Magic, work in your area. In most circumstances, you can have your bathtub reglazing finished in just one day.
