Dirt bike racing has become increasingly popular over the last few years. Here is a list of quick facts about this up and coming sport. The basics of Motocross; everything you need to know to get started.

Age- The age range for dirt bike riders can vary greatly. It can span from the young at 3 years-old all the way to your early 30s. This is one sport where you will see a retirement age at a relatively young point; often around 26. Riders racing for fun however (and not professional) usually get a longer time out of their hobby. Some riders are still riding well into their 50s.

Needed credentials for racing– With any sport there are forms that need to be signed. Each and every time you go for a race you need to sign a consent form. These are basic forms and pretty standard among any track. Basically you are stating that the track is not responsible for your injuries or death. Before racing you need to apply for a district card and get your plate numbers. It is also necessary for you to apply for your AMA card.

Getting a sponsor is not needed, but highly recommended due to the high costs associated with racing. You incur many fees; gate and entrance fees, traveling expenses, and the upkeep of the bike.

Basic gear- Riding dirt bikes can be a dangerous sport. It is essential to have the proper gear in order to minimize injuries. Your basic gear consists of; elbow, wrist, and knee pads, protective gloves, chest protector, goggles, helmet, jersey, pants, and boots. Of course you will need a bike!

Bike- There are different series of bikes out there to choose from. Do not worry what your best friend is riding or what the pros are using. Start off with what is comfortable for you. A smaller bike that is adjusted properly for you could make all the difference in your riding experience. Always learn the basics and begin slowly. Like many, if you are traveling for your races you will need transportation for your bike. A trailer or a truck would suffice.

Common Races- Before you begin any race it will be determined what class you fall into. Classes are broken down into age, gender, and skill levels. It is possible for you to have more than one race a day.

Enduros– These are where you race your dirt bike through challenging wooded areas. They are also known as wood races.

Hare Scrambles- These races consist of you riding your bike through long looping marked trail in the woods. Riders need both speed and endurance. The typical race here last approximately 2 hours.

Free style- Show off your tricks and skills with free style dirt biking. In 2002, Nate Adams won the World Freestyle Motocross Championship.

Motocross- These races are done on a closed track. You race through hills, jumps, and turns for points.

Supercross– Here you race through steep jumps and other obstacles. The track can either be dirt, asphalt, or both.

Arenacross– This is indoor racing complete with tight jumps and maneuvers. Riders need advanced skills and technique to maneuver through this tight course.

James Stewart- A well known name in Motocross/Supercross would be rider number 7, James Stewart. Besides Ricky Carmichael, Stewart is the only other rider to complete a perfect season.
